BIOS won't recognize disk drives?
2003-12-06, 6:53 PM #1
I just finished building a computer, and I used a hard drive from my old computer. Now, it had winXP and linux on it, as well as a good bootloader that let me do all sorts of adjustments.

But for some reason, my bios won't recognize my CD drives! I have 2, and they both work in linux, but the comp dosn't recognize bootable disks on startup. The floppy does work. How do I get my motherboard to rocognize these disks?

I reformated my hard drive, and I get the same problem. (I reinstalled the bootload with some floppys, but linux is gone.)

Er, how do you do that GBK? There is a jumper on the motherboard that changes the startup mode, but other than that I have no idea.

This was generated by the bootloader:

Okey, I checked my BIOS settings, and all the drives are regestered. There was one thing that said "Plug & Play OS" and I enabled it... did nothing. There is nothing in the BIOS that seemed to matter. What(TF) do I do? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

So your BIOS does see the drives and your OS doesn't?

Change the order in which the PC looks for drives to boot off of. All of my motherboards default in such a way that CD-ROM isn't before the hard drive in boot order, making it impossible to boot off a CD.

Hey, thats kinda funny. Cause . you know . . . I dont have a 'Device manager' . . and yet . . my CDRW works . . my DVD drive works . . and ya know whats even funnier? I can boot my system with a CD without a floppy drive.

No, dude, CDs can be bootable, you dont need DOS, you dont need boot floppies. Whatever the demonic fairy told you on your majical trip through pixie-dust land aint true.

Yeah, I don't even have an operating system installed right now. Does the order they are detected have to do with the jumpers? Or is it in the BIOS congig? In any case, the drives work fine... the BIOS just isn't picking them up on startup.

Mystic, check your master/slave jumper configs on the drives, and make sure they are getting power...

Ok, I know they are getting power as I am able to open them. I also know that I took all my drives out of a working SONY computer and havn't touched the jumpers ever. But then I don't have the box or manuel for any of those dirves either. :/

If this is true, then why was I able to access the drives in linux but not on startup? There must have been drivers on the OS then, but it didn't make a difference.

Yes. Ive also built more computers than you apparently seen. Go out and get a copy of "The PC Bootstrap Sequence For Dummies" and read it. You might learn a thing or two.

What motherboard do you have? Some old motherboards diddnt allow booting from CD-Rom which is why the win98 boot disk had a "Start computer with CD-ROM support" option.

In your bios, check the section called "Standard CMOS setup"

Here you can configure your drives. Set all 4 options to auto and it will find them itself. (Or at least should)

No . . . I just . . cant . . stop . . laughing . .

You wrong. Accept it, and move on. And next time, be wary of proclaiming things of which you KNOW NOTHING.

You can boot CDs on systems with blank hard drives, and even systems that lack hard drives altogether. Dont believe me? Try it. Youll find that I am right. Now stop this nonsense before you make *more* of a fool of yourself.

Oh man, your still being an idiot. We do it all the freaken time in our class. Hell, we just got a whole load of new computers from the warehouse and formated them. And what did we use to install an OS? You guessed it! A floppy to boot. Still saying no? Then why would we waist our time loading the drivers in the memory to make the CDRoms work to install the OS. Kthxbye.

...Because you didnt realize that you could simply throw in a bootable CD and be done with it? Accept your ignorace, learn from your mistakes. MOVE ON.

I dont know, Ive never used Nero. But you tell me, how did I install this copy of Suse 8.2 on this workstation, that had 2 blank hard drives, NO FLOPPY DRIVE, off of CDs? Because the CDs are BOOTABLE. If it wernt possible to boot from CDs, I wouldnt be making this post.

***R E S O L V E D***

First: Stop the flame war!
Nauree, wtf are you on, you don't need an OS or a floppy to boot from the CD...
It's working woot!

I had to change the boot priority and put the disk drive over the hard drive in the BIOS congig.

The bad news:
-------------
My old SONY bootdisk dosn't want to let me install winXP, so I have a couple of options. I'm installing linux, but I'm gonna need to get a copy of WinXP/Win2000 on ebay. Or I could use a windows emulator... whatever. There is one cavet though, and that is that WinXP comes with an activation code that can only be used a certain way and a used copy of winXP might not install.

YAA!!!!!!! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Yeah, most ``repair CDs`` wont work on systems other than those they were intended for.

What distro are you installing? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Pre ~1994, yeah. Also, CD drives from that era lacked support for bootable CDs. But anything make in the past 10 years should be able to boot CDs just fine.
If all the experiance youve ever had was on obsolete crap, I pity you.

Nauree: GBK is right, of course. You, sir, are pitifully wrong. Any computer manufactured in the last 5 or 10 years will probably be able to boot from a CD.

Look up "El Torito" and "cd rom" on Google sometime.

[edit]Damn it, I'm late. I wanted to flame him too.

Mystic0: Go ahead and buy XP used: bypassing activation isn't difficult.

Mandrake [http://forums.massassi.net/html/redface.gif]... not because I'm stupid but because it's all I have right now. I hear Debian and Slackware are good though. I will probobly get WinXP pro with a partition, simply because I don't feel like dealing with emulators. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Oh, and I'll take this time to show off the sweet system I just built:
-------------
Intel D875PBZ mobo
Intel P4 2.6 GHz 800 FSB with HT
2 sticks of dual channel 512mb PC-3200 DDR SDRAM @ 400 MHz each
Geforce 4 TI 4200 (Soon will be a Radeon 9700 pro)
Sound Blaster Audigy
Creative Inspire 5300 5.1 speakers (crap but cheap)
