About 8 months after XP came out Bill Gates got an idea on a new Windows OS. He was thinking about calling it "Windows 1000" He said that instead of naming Windows OS's weird names like ME, XP, etc he would just go down the road using 1000, 2000, 3000, etc. When all of his OS programers heard of his idea they got to work. They wanted this new Windows OS to be able to handle things such as no other OS could before. Kinda like Insane high speed, 256 bit support etc. He wanted this OS to last for a very long time.
