Tell me what you think. It's in the hardcore/metalcore genre.

I would much appreciate feedback.

I was thinking that it was pretty decent until the singing started. I'm going to pull a grandpa and say "You youngins know nothin' about music!"

Yea, the singing is overdone, lighten up on the grumbly/gutteral accent.

reminds me of bands like The Redmption Song (a little) and Not Waving but Drowning (couldn't find a link) ... also a few others i like it...

Or better yet, lose it altogether. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif] It's really not necessary. We want to hear your beautiful voice! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Other than the vocals, do something with the guitar. It's not very exciting...

A good start would be to tune it out of Drop D. :P

Yeah, you need to either go with normal singing or get better at screaming, because right now it's just sort of grumbling.

what the hell does metalcore mean?

i like it, but some of the more complex stuff sounds similar to a lot of bands doing that, i think it all sounds like music from golden axe... a lot of the riffs are cool though.

I believe "metalcore" refers to a style that merges metal and hardcore. I may be wrong though... there are just too many sub-genres to keep track of these days.

The vocals...wow. I'm sorry, they're comedically bad. Ditch the vocals, get someone who can sing. The guitar's great and the drums are good (I didn't hear a bass?). But lose the vocals.

Instead of just complaining about the vocals, I'll actually give some advice:

When you do the low grumbly thing, it should come almost directly from your lungs. If you feel it comming from the upper part of your throat, it's not going to sound right, plus you'll end up with a sore throat in almost no time.

By starting your voice as far down your throat as you can, you'll puts more bass into your vocal tone, if done correctly.

Thanks a lot for the feedback everyone. As for the vocals, I'm actually not too pleased with how they turned out. I'm not the one doing the vocals, I just play guitar. I really want to add more melodic (like actual singing) parts to go along with the screaming, but we didn't have time this time around. Also our vocalist was doing it oddly in the studio, he sounds a ton better live, he actually uses his lungs more. Idk for some reason he was all throat in the studio.

And yes, metalcore = metal + hardcore. And don't get guitar elitist on me about drop tunings, I know my way around a guitar, drop d just works the best for this style. I'm considering going to C# actually.

Well anyway, thanks a ton for the comments.

There's definitely bass in there, it's about medium in the mix.

You think so? That's a bummer, I like my guitar parts. Did you just listen to the first song (Ellipse). That's a pretty boring one, and very old.

I also want to mention that we've only been a band for like 6 months, and this is the first real band I've been in; it's also our first recording.

Bass is a critical instrument. It has a lot of control over chords. It needs to be louder. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Maybe this is just my personal preference, but the guitar could use just a hint of an echo. Without it, it sounds kinda dry. Again, that might just be my opinion.

[edit: When I say "echo" I mean like a room or hallway type echo, not like some long, drawn-out echo]

I have to say, you've got one of the best grind/metalcore sounds I've heard. Very enjoyable riffs. (Wow, I Hope You Get) Leprosy is probably my favorite.

Vocals don't bother me. Sounds almost exactly like Poison the Well. It's to be expected in the genre. However, I think the two best hardcore vocal styles come from the bands Strife and Snapcase. If your vocalist is going to continue using that kind of style, try and get him to lean more towards Strife's style (examples: Will to Die, Waiting, Grey). If you get him to go more melodic, get him to lean toward Snapcase's style (examples: Caboose, Zombie Perscription, Breaking and Reaching).

I'll be adding those mp3s to my collection though. I look forward to hearing some more.

Yeah, the first one didn't strike my fancy very much, but, for what you were doing, it was pretty good, however pretty basic at parts. Your guitar work did improve in some of the later tracks. In my opinion (and maybe because I'm a pretentious music snob..who knows? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif] ) it sounds too much like... your typical hardcore/metal/grindcore/ etc bands (it's almost a goddamn formula these days) which are becoming quite stale.

I will say, though, that you guys play together quite well. It was all very tight.

Guitar is nice, although it rushes the beat alot. Not alot as in it's really rushing, but as in it's rushing just a little, but quite often. The guitar does need a little 'verb, though. The drums are good. Bass is good, but needs to be brought out a little more (and to be eq'd to not interfere with the kick). The vocals need to be redone with either:
a) someone who isn't afraid to actually sing
b) someone who isn't using a vocodor

But overall, I'm impressed. Try remastering, or getting it remastered. I'd definetly listen to it if it was just redone a little little bit.

Umm, I'm not noticing the rushing, could you point out a few spots? I'm not going to worry about a remaster, it's only a demo, and only a 3 song one at that.

Also, I don't even know what a vocodor is.

you are aware that is a vocal style not an effect... and the proper spelling is vocoder anyway

vo·cod·er P Pronunciation Key (vkdr)
n.
An electronic device or system for synthesizing speech

Nope, it's a device.

But I still had no idea what one was, and our singer definitely didn't use one. Haha, I doubt he even know what one is. Unless you were just mocking us. Which is cool...if you want to look like a jerk.

I was using it as an example of: Your singer just sounded really distorted to me i.e. using a vocoder. I'll get back about the rushing guitar tomorrow, I'm too tired to relisten right now.

There are no effects on the vocals at all, except for slight reverb.

No. Reverb is known to cause feedback and/or high-pitched "ringing".

My particular guitar processor (probably most processors) contains "hall" effects and "room" effects. I'll have to bring it home and record something to show what I mean.

Fancy names for Reverb. all reverb does is simulate sound bouncing off hard surfaces.

all my "hall" and "room" and other such settings are under the Reverb section of my processor (Digitech RP100) usually the word "echo" is used when referring to delay so [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

correct. Echo = delay. Reverb is the name for all that room shaping 3d ish. It sets up a virtual model of the sound reverberating throughout a room.

'Verb will only cause feedback if you aren't being carefull. But hell, you have to be just as uncareful to get 'verb on a pure sound anyways.
