Does your religion affect your music choice?
2004-02-26, 9:28 AM #1
I know, I'm sorry for combining the now-gone religious forum with the new music forum. However, I'm really getting tired of people calling me a satanist for listening to music like Cradle of Filth or Dimmu Borgir. I like them for the music they make, and don't mind their lyrics (Then again, I'm an atheist). Songs like Cradle of Filth's Stanic Mithra, don't affect me in the slightest way, however, I believe there are people that are affected by such songtexts.

My question to you would be: Does your religion affect you music choice, and if yes, in what way?

Yes. I do listen to both Christian and secular music, but I'm pretty careful with the secular stuff, usually in terms of the lyrics. I try to stay away from anything with any swearing in it, or blatantly obvious corrupted morals. I really like songs that have a very searching sort of feel to them (ie, Hoobastank's Crawling In the Dark) which I would guess is a result of me being Christian.

Anyway, it really saddens me when I hear a song that has an awesome sound to it, and then they start swearing or something, cause then I don't listen to it anymore.

Religion doesn't generally influence my choice in music. I listen to Metallica, Nirvana, and I used to listen to Slipknot.
Off my Twisted Metal 4 cd, I listen to Rob Zombie's Dragula, Skold's Chaos, and Cirrus' Time's Running Out.

I listen to Catholic/Christian/Religious music only at church [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif].

btw, you're not satanous for liking some stuff that's not religion-oriented. If someone thinks you are, that's most likely bs they're throwing at you to make you feel guilty or something.

I love some of Dimmu Borgirs music but I can't stand the constant screaming. I don't think listening to death/black metal makes you a satanist.

Anyway, For me, being an athiest, my religion plays no part in my music taste.

I have a rather diverse taste in music, so I've been called anything from gay because I listen to enrique iglesias to a satanist because I listen to darker stuff. Seems like anyone who doesn't do like everyone else is cursed to be judged.. it's pretty inevitable. Best thing to do is just ignore them.

Ironically, becoming a Christian has broadened my taste in music. I used to listen to Modern Country (and still do rarely - don't laugh), but I can now tolerate & enjoy almost any style (except rap [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]). I love anything with great guitar leads and/or excellent rhythm, so long as the lyrics are sensible and the singer doesn't start raving on about his b****, or sing about hating everything.

I've never been great with keeping track of bands, but off the top of my head... 3 Doors Down, Staind, Switchfoot, and Nickelback to name a few. System of a Down and Disturbed are ok, too.

I have no idea why I became interested in other styles after becoming a Christian. Maybe becaue my church isn't into 20+ year old hymns that are boring to no end. I *love* being lead guitarist there.

Too bad there wasn't more Christian music in styles like these. Then I could have both the things I like in a single package. Oh well.

I try not to get to into it, but I get pissed that so many of you listen the all of the stuff that is "in". I can never really tell if a person really does like nu-metal, or if he's just into it because everyone else is. There's too many great indy bands, and to see everybody only listening to stuff that's on MTV2 Rock, or whatever... it bothers me. I guess I would stereotype said people by calling them "brainless sheep" or whatnot. But if you keep an open mind while listening to all kinds of music, and you really do like what's "in"... awesome.

I really do like things that are "in" I guess because I like Coldplay. They're kind of in and kind of not. Sort of like Radiohead, where it's ok to like them if you're trying to be cool by being a non-conformist because for some reason they go past the "you listen to what's popular? DIE DIE DIE!"

But I cant stand 99% of the stuff that's played on the radio.... especially nu-metal... bleh.

No way. There is only one way for me to like music, and that is (SURPRISE) to listen to the music and then I'll decide if I like it or not. There's no matter of the genre or anything, if the stuff is good I'll listen to it.

I agree. Also I'm a bit tired of the stereotypes linked to music. People always think I listen to rap or RnB (or similar things) - when in actual fact I listen to stuff like Lost Prophets, Deftones, System of a Down, The Doves and Radiohead.

Another thing is how people's clothing is influenced by their music or visa versa...

I can't listen to music which lyrics are bad, and in my case that is religious music. Tough I listen sometimes to music that is rather Christian, but only when the lyrics are english and I don't understand em directly.. but when they start to thing in German about how Jesus saved em I have to stop the music... wargh

Yay, heh, I got scared for a second Wolfy.

I've noticed that the more I've gotten serious with my band the more I let my music (meaning the music I write) affect my lifestyle. My music is similar to Radiohead/Muse/Travis or something, those are the common 3 people tell me I remind them of. Now when I go looking for clothes it's not what I like, it's what'll look cool onstage... so ya, it's what I like...

Never been religous.
I've heard CHristian music. It hurts my ears and burns my skin [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif].
Have always liked trance and classical, but also REM and U2.

Then I found Sarah MCLaclan and Tori Amos.

The over time, started liking TenacousD.

Then I broke up with a gf, and it hit me hard, and I started liking System of a Down.

Then I discovered Apocalyptica, and here I am.
