Rage Against The Machine or Audioslave?

Which group do you like better?

I think Audioslave is a better band: more intelligent lyrics, better music, better voclalist.

I like neither. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I like RATM better because of their sound...their "political" lyrics are crappy though. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I think Rage Against The Machine are better for the exact same reasons fingarez highlighted.

Chris Cornell and Zack de la Rocha are about as different vocal/lyrical styles as you can get (at least in the world of rock n' roll).
2004-03-08, 8:00 AM #9
I like both equally.

Chris Cornell is one of my favourite singers of all time now, but I liked RatM long before I really discovered Audioslave.

I would say both bands had very intelligent lyrics, just in different ways, which is perhaps why I couldnt choose between them. I listen to whichever I am in the mood for.

Angry usually = RatM, reflective/down/angry of a different kind = Audioslave

I just realised no one has mentioned Soundgarden yet...I actually tend to get Audioslave and Soundgarden mixed up, which is terrible, but also highlights I think that Audioslave are after a fashion a more mature Soundgarden. Even so I reckon Soundgarden were better than either band! Read the lyrics to "The Day I Tried to Live" or "Burden In My Hand" for some idea why I think so, then feel free to disagree [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I'd take Rage Against the Machine over Audioslave any day of the week.

I'm not sure how you can really get Audioslave and Soundgarden mixed up. Audioslave is more blues/metal rock, whereas Soundgarden was grunge rock.

It's easy to get Soundgarden and Audioslave mixed up, because they have the same lead singer, Chris Cornell. For those unfamiliar with what happened, Zack de la Rocha left Rage Against The Machine in 2000, and Chris Cornell left Soundgarden to join the remaining members of RATM. They formed Audioslave and released their first album in 2002.

If everybody already knew that, I'm sorry for pointing out the obvious, but I just got the impression few people realized that.

I couldn't stand Soundgarden and I can't stand Audioslave. Draw your own conclusions. RATM was a favorite of mine back before they became popular. Now that I've grown away from rock, I can't stand them anymore either.

Oh aye, I don't understand myself how I get them confused :P It ain't that you could play me a song and I'd have to think about it before stating which band I was listening to, it's more that I seem to fail to draw a proper distinction between them in my head...basically if I'm talking about Soundgarden I forget that Audioslave exist, and when I'm talking about Audioslave, I forget Soundgarden exist and think of their stuff as earlier Audioslave. Stupid no? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Back on topic: I have to say I like RatM first album much more than their later offerings. Zach's voice seemed a lot more powerful and raw back in the early days
2004-03-09, 3:40 PM #18
That's a pretty difficult question. Even though they have similar styles (for obvious reasons), they're not really the same type of music. But I think I'd have to say I prefer Rage at its' peak (The Battle of Los Angeles) over what Audioslave has released so far.

I like Audioslave better

Though I loved the overall sound of Soundgarden and some of the messages in rage Against the Machine, the combination put out by Chris Cornell's vocals and the wierd sounds and riffs by RATM's guitarist, it really appeals to me. It's a lot more of a psychedelic sound. Softer than both RATM and SG, but still has that great classic psychedelic rock element.

I liked RatM when they were around, all though their lyrics DID NEED WORK. They wrote songs about good things, but their creativity lay in the music, not the words.

However, I'm also pretty happy with Audioslave.

If I had to choose, I'd go for RatM simply for ol' times sake. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Because Zac is a better vocalist and the Cornell is stifling Tom Morello's talent. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

0_o Stifling Morello's talent?? Please explain because if so, that's terrible! IMHO Cornell is a far better vocalist but that's mainly as he actually sings and can actually express different moods than 'vaguely-directed anger'. Don't get me wrong I think Zach is great, just less versatile, and Cornell is incredibly powerful in a lot of songs. Also his lyrics are frankly amazing.

I like both. It took me a little while to catch on with Audioslave, but they're cool. Rage is something I listen to when I want to get fired up. We used to blast Rage before lacrosse games when I was in high school. Audioslave has a little bit mellower sound that I think flows a little bit better than Rage. As other people have said, it depends on my mood.

Morello has a knack for making outrageously funked out solos. The man does things that no other guitar player even thinks about, and they always end up being pure genius. Without the "funk" aspect of rage, which is what most people interperate as rap, he doesn't have the opportunity to do so, and as such you end up with the more traditional solos that you hear on songs such as I Am The Highway.

I can't say I was ever really impressed by the sounds Morello pulled out in RatM. Sure, they definitely weren't the traditional sound a guitar makes, and I'll give him credit that it is creative in its own respect, but that doesn't mean it necessarily sounded all that great.

What, what, what?!?!
More intelligent lyrics??? Cornell's lyrics don't come close to Rocha's. I loved the political stuff about RATM.
Better music!? It's the same band! The only difference is the singer.
Personally, I think they had more freedom as RATM. Now they're just following the post-grunge formula ala Creed.
Better vocalist, well, I guess that one is subjective.

Yecti - cue up "Hypnotize". That's some pretty unconventional guitar playing on the part of Morello.
