People are so quick to say that a band is either great or it sucks, but does anyone bother to recognize the bands that are kinda "meh"? Post bands that you think are merely adequate!

Everybody makes a big deal about these bands, but IMHO they are merely average:

Chevelle
Coheed and Cambria
Dropkick Murphys
Godsmack
Incubus
Linkin Park
Audioslave

------------------
Space Colony Inc. Phoenix Suburban City Dereliction

I like the dropkicks and incubus (incubus is the best comedown music ever).

Mediocre/overrated bands:

Metallica
all these new whiney emo bands like Coheed & Cambria and My Chemical Romance.
Linkin Park
Disturbed
Evanescence
AFI
Staind (Dysfunction was awesome, everything since is Meh)
Placebo
The Doves
The Offspring

the list could go on but i'm tired.

All the prism in the world couldn't make hue.

For me, meh is nearly the same thing as sucks.
I also kind of wonder about whether a thread like this will end up in a bad place. Here I go anyway, I guess...

[opinion alert: I'm not trying to tell anyone what's good or bad, even though in some of these cases I think my opinion is absolute truth]

TOOL!!!!
Most overrated band ever. Add A Perfect Circle to that too.

Coldplay
Oasis
U2 (They're quite good sometimes, but way overrated)
Travis
Audioslave
Septic Yogurt's list (except AFI and The Doves simply because I haven't heard any of their stuff)
Nickleback
Jet
Nine Inch Nails
Marilyn Manson
Orgy
Korn
Disturbed
Godsmack
Puddle of Mudd
Mudvayne
Opeth
Anti-Flag
Dashboard Confessional
Sevendust
Yellowcard
Three Day's Grace
Any nu-metal band except SoaD
White Zombie
Rob Zombie
Mars Volta

I think I'll stop for now.

To be brutally honest...

I listen to new/alternative rock all the time. www.1065.com if you want a better idea. But even though there is loads of stuff I like that is out there now, the best stuff is the old stuff. I'd say 80-90% of today's music is "meh". I still enjoy it though, it just doesn't stack up to oldies.

Come on. Just because I don't like something doesn't mean you have to take it personally.
Mars Volta are actually all right, I just think they're sort of overrated. I know people who seem to think that they're divine or something.
There's one song of theirs where they do this jazzy jam, and that really is awesome though.

I think a lot of bands people think are super awesome are overratted. Jimi Hendrix was (and still is) entertaining, but there is no way he was the messiah of music. He didn't save it from death. Most people who died young from an OD are in this category as well (Joplin, Morrison, etc.). Bands like Led Zeppelin are good, but heavily overratted in my opinion.

That's different. I just don't think Mars Volta deserve all the praise they get.

Well, if you took euphoric drugs, you'd think it was the greatest thing no matter what you were listening to.

I find it kind of funny that people are calling some bands overrated when you were like 5 years old when some of these bands made their biggest impacts. I don't see how some of you can call Metallica overrated when some of you weren't even born when their best albums came out. If you were living at that time and actually listening to music, I have a feeling your views would be a little different

Jimi was an absolutely amazing Muscian. Thats what set him apart from many other guitar players. Oh, and, people thought he was "super awesome". Ask your average teenager from today about him? Youd get a response like, "OMG, Hes a hippy." from the semi-smart people, and a "Who?" from most [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

While you have a good point, it isn't true for me. I simply don't care about what Metallica did, because I don't care about their type of music. I don't care about or like most of the bands that influenced them (well, Zepplin's okay, I guess), and I don't care about of like the bands they influenced. As someone who listens to a lot of stuff from before the 90's, I appreciate musical impact a lot.

I have to back you up here. Jimi Hendrix was quite an amazing guitar player. He knew how to improvise great music, and knew the guitar inside out.

But does that make a band mediocre? You don't have to like a band for them to be a good band. It just doesn't appeal to you, personally, and that's never a problem. On the flip side, I like the Ramones, but musically, they were mediocre at best.

Probably not. Someone who thinks the Pixies sucked would probably be a lost cause anyway. I figured you weren't serious because people who say negative things about The Pixies most likely don't know what they're talking about.
They're hardly my favorite band though. That honor goes to Toad the Wet Sprocket. The Pixies are probably my 6th or 7th favorite band.

You're right about the first part, that's why I put an opinion alert in the beginning of my first post on this thread.
I don't think musical talent really have much to do with how good a band is. They might not have known how to play their instruments too well, but they wrote awesome songs. Ever heard Bonzo Goes to Bitsburg? That one sounds like they actually knew how to play their instruments on.

Yep. Sometimes I also overexaggerate my opinions just to argue, for example if I went up to a bunch of Lord of the Rings fans who are getting on my nerves with their stupidity and said "LotR sucks!" even if I like it quite a bit.
Erm... not that there's stupidity here.
