Nifty Unreal Tournament style techno music??!!
2004-03-23, 11:44 AM #1
I was hoping someone might know where I could find free, public domain music akin to Unreal Tournament that was looping and hopefully under a minute.

I'm hoping on putting it in a level. And I don't want some long flame war about how this is illegal. If Flexor can have Crystal Nova music (which is awesome, but I can't seem to find any) in his levels, surely so can I provided there's no copyright infringement attached. Thankyou!

I thought Flexor himself composed all of the music he used in his levels.

mp3.com used to be a good site to find good independantly-made techno, but not anymore. You might try this site:

http://www.soundclick.com/

Make sure you have permission from the song artists before you use any of their music in your levels.

Really? I always remember him saying, "...enjoy some of this new music by Crystal Nova..." Is that his band or something?

As for soundclick.com, I've actually already ben there, I tried searching but it was very hard to find. I don't know the exact description for the kind of music I'm looking for - sort of Unreal Tournamentish (as in the '99 version). Does it have a specific name, because I'm not sure if techno narrows the field enough or if it is even the right genre. I don't know much about music, so for me it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. If you might suggest some possible search categories for me that describe what I'm looking for, I'd be much obliged. Thankyou!

Unreal Tournament's music is now public domain.

Oh, and yes, Crystal Nova is Flexor's music name.

[http://forums.massassi.net/html/eek.gif] Are you serious? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/eek.gif]

That's awesome!!! I could probably ust use one of their songs. But just curious, how did you find out about this, could you give me a link, because I just want to be sure, so I can offer evidence if Massassi get's suspicious.

How do I find them as well. I tried googling and it wasn't very effective. Do you just extract them from the game because they're in a file format only UT can read. Do I convert them or get them off the net? Links Please! Thankyou immensely!!!

Oh, ok, so CN is Flexor's band - awesome! That man has talents! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I've heard about the UT music being public domain.. unfortunately I don't have a link to back that up. You could always use some of my music as long as you give credit.

For what it's worth (and it's probably not [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]), I love UT's soundtrack for the Morpheus DM level - now that is a truly kick-*** adrenaline-pumping tune - fits the level perfectly [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

The best UT song is Razorback, found in DM-Liandri.

Just while we're discussing this (apologies if I'm going off on a tangent... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/redface.gif]) - does anyone happen to know where there is some sort of media-player that supports the UT soundtracks' file type or the location for any codecs to be able to play the music files outside of the UT main application?

Also, although Flexor mentions that the music is now public domain, which format is it in (if it's in a different - related issues above apply here as well...)?

Cheers for any information that can shed a little light on these questions people [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Sorry for the late update people, I had my mind on other things. I have taken your word that UT music is now public domain, and I managed to find some software which converted the *.umx to *.wav, and then I further modified it with GoldWave.

I used the song Organic, which I personally think is one of the best. Although I really like Run (is that the one in morpheus? That is my fav level!). I edited it so I only got less than 30 seconds of song, and I unfortunately the least exciting part of the song at that. I may change it around a bit more, as the break in the loop's stil a bit noticeable.

As for you Jackpot, assuming you have UT, you can run the music in Windows using UnrealEd. You can then load up the music in a little player featured on the main menu of the editor. If you would like to convert them to mp3 or wav or whatever, get modplug's tracker for easy conversion of umx sound files.

Thanks again, I may post the edited snippet of music up here so you can tell me if it's ok (or not).

Cheers for the info Daft_Vader [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

However, I... umm... *cough* don't believe I have UnrealEd with my "version" of UT... *cough* [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

I don't see why I can't drag the sound files off the CD though... *thinks and goes for a "music-play-around"...* [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Thanks again [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Jackpot, unless your computer's totally different, I'm not certain if you completely got what I'm saying. THe link I gave you will give you a program that can convert UT's *.umx files into *.wav and you can further modify/convert that .wav in GoldWave.

If you want to know where the UMX sound files are, they're in C:\UnrealTournament\Music on my machine. If they're on the cd for you, you just need to do a full install for UT. It takes up about a Gigabyte of space, but then you don't need the cd to run the game, the game runs much smoother, and you have access to all the files. Hope that Clarifies! Sorry for the confusion - yes I got exactly what you meant (even if I didn't express it clearly [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]) - I'm all sorted now [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]
