Band of the Week
2004-03-23, 5:20 PM #1
Have you ever had weeks where you just about listen to only one band?
If that's happening now, what band is it?

This week I've been listening to a ton of New Order, which has to be one of my favorite bands.
Any New Order fans here? There has to be at least one of you.

This week I've mostly been listening to internet radio, the stations on http://www.di.fm, to be specific.

For this band, I tend to take months at a time...Five Iron Frenzy. Too bad they're dead.

Did you know that they're coming out with a new CD? They're calling it "The End Is Here" and it's a 2-CD set of their last live show in Denver, CO, and their last studio release.
I'm not a big fan of some of their new stuff, but their "The End Is Near" tour has plenty of their old stuff, including a 10-song megamix. The concert I saw on that tour was totally awesome, which means their last show must've been...Wow.

When I first got APC (both CD's), I listened to them over and over and over again. Lately I've just been listening to my whole collection in random order.

Not to sidetrack this thread, but...

Yeah Da_Roosta, I was fortunate enough to catch a show of their farewell tour. I'm really looking forward to "The End Is Here," and personally I really like their new stuff, but to each his own. I've heard they are considering releasing a DVD as well.

I'm disturbed by the apparent lack of New Order fans here. The original version of Blue Monday was way better than Orgy's cover, and is definitely a classic.
It starts off with a drum machine beat that picks up speed until it is like a machine gun, pulling you in and then stops and starts over, keeping a steady beat. The synth music kicks in and after a minute or so ethereal voices sing a short bit. Bernard Sumner's voice comes in, singing in monotone. After each verse, the drum machine does the machine gun thing again.
The song is amazing. And it's not even their best.

I like their singles (Crystal, 60mph, Slow Jam) but some of the other stuff they do is just plain weird.

I understand that. The only album of theirs I have is Substance (a sort of greatest hits thing), and while disc 1 is great, disc 2 is full of dance remixes of their other songs. I haven't actually heard any of the songs you named. I highly recommend these songs:
Ceremony
Temptation
Blue Monday
Bizarre Love Triangle
True Faith

You might find True Faith a little too poppy. It would have sounded much more original when it came out, but it sounds like a lot of today's pop is heavily influenced by it.

Death Cab for Cutie is one of those bands that I've been wanting to listen to but haven't bought any of their cds yet.
I just found some free legal downloads, but I'll listen to them later. I'm too busy listening to Chris Bell.

Counting Crows

I was going to go to their concert here tomorrow night, but I just found out the tour got cancelled [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

So I'm listening to 5 of their albums back to back instead.

Well, Recovering the Satellites has my favourite song by them on it (A Long December), but This Desert Life and Hard Candy are not without their charms (or flaws). I think August has by far the best structure of any of their albums, the other 3 meander a lot and have trouble sticking to a theme. Desert Life would be better if some of the songs were shorter, but it is held together by some absolute classics like Hanging Around, Colorblind, and All My Friends. Hard Candy would be better without so many fade-outs and repetative lyrics, the writing in general for the album is a little bland and uninspired (the biggest single being Big Yellow Taxi, a cover and originally the hidden track highlights this). Hard Candy is also definitely Counting Crows pop-iest album, which could be a good or bad thing. Still, Miami stands out as probably one of their greatests songs ever, Up All Night is quintessential Crows at their best, and Holiday In Spain has become always the last song they play at concerts, so it's a bit of a classic in that regard.

If you like Recovering the Satellites you should like This Desert Life, the band didnt really evolve too much between those two albums. Hard Candy is definitely worth owning if you enjoy the other 3 albums, just dont expect another August and Everything After.

Thank you. I will definitely have to buy them someday.
I adore August and Everything After. I used to listen to it every night. Satellites isn't quite as good, but I like it anyway. I second you on A Long December.
