Disclaimer: This Thread is METAL, if you don't like Metal, I doubt the reviews here will be of much use to you, unless you want to get in the genre.

Norther - Dreams Of Endless War
(Finland - 2002)

Well, where to begin. I'm a big fan of the finnish metal scene, as two of my favorite bands are finns, (Kalmah and CoB), and I was sort of expecting material up to par when I picked up this CD.

The first listen in the store was promising, promising enough to buy, and it wasn't too expensive, so that helped. Fast Forward to the second listen at home, and this is where it gets nasty.

Yes, Norther has mastered the Black Power Metal genre perfectly. Sadly, it's too perfect. They stick to the boundaries of the genre, and don't experiment with other influences. The guitar work is fast, but only in the picking, there isn't much varied harmony in most of the songs, and I've come to the realization that at least 2-4 songs start out on the same rythm progression.. which gets kinda redundant.

Overall, I'd say 5/10, it's good metal, but it's not something you'd listen over and over.

Einherjer - Native Norwegian Art
Norway - 2000

Let's change scenes completely and take a look at a really refreshing album, because that's what came into my mind when I heard the first tracks.

Einherjer is a band that labels themselves as Viking Metal, and they really live up to it. Each song if varied, and has that low end "big scandinavian dude" feeling in most of the melody. There's a lot of nicely added keyboard + war drums interludes admist the songs, the whole viking theme really manifesting itself in a lot of songs.

Also, the vocals left me surprised, their singer isn't a singer, but he's not a Screamer either. Somehow, he manages to half mumble and half sing, and it works really well, although the mixing of his vocals was kinda quiet, the voice you hear is really different from most metal these days.

Sadly, Einherjer is now disbanded, but it's still a good album, 8/10

I'll post two more reviews next sunday if you people are interested. Also, I could put up sound 0:30 sound samples if there's enough people asking.

Hmmm...the singer sounds a bit like Das letzte Einhorn from In Extremo.

I have heard of Blind Guardian, mostly from people talking about them at TACC.

I have most their CD's. A Night at the Opera was too over the top though (Their latest release), as it felt they just tried to cram too much into it. Probably one of the best songs ever is on that album though, "And Then There Was Silence". Another thing, the sound and production on that album was CRAP.

Listen to Nightfall and compare - the sound should not go downhill in later releases.

I just hope Nightfall in Middle Earth is not going to be the peak of their career, but judging from how long it might be till we hear a finished album again from them...it'll be a wait.

I concur, Nightfall was easily the best, and Night at the opera has some mad songs, but they're even greater on the Live at Milano album, no stupid over-producing.

Einherjer rocks! At least that song [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I like the voice, not that high voice that music of that style usualy has, more violent [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] Cool!

"And Then There Was Silence" is fantastic, but I also like a few of the other songs on ANATO, but they take a fair bit of getting used to.

Nightfall is pretty damn good, too.
