Grrr Melissa Etheridge aka Song Stealer
2004-04-17, 11:04 PM #1
I'm flipping past Vh1 today, and a Melissa Etheridge video is on. Nothing out of the ordinary, except that the song she's playing was written by Greenwheel, a band out of St. Charles, Missouri. I like Greenwheel a lot more because they're local and because they play good music. It irks me that a song that sounded so much better when performed by them didn't get much popularity, but it does when it gets performed by a big name like Melissa Etheridge. And she more or less butchered the song. I know they sold the song, because they said so at their concert I went to, but grrr on Melissa Etheridge anyway.

Yup, that's what happens when you turn art into a business.

Heh. Well, to elaborate on what I said, A good majority of pop singers don't even write their own stuff. How they got to make a CD is beyond me, But the concept of someone making a CD with minimal musical knowledge is beyond me.

Yes, its sad when an artists chooses a cover from their album for the video. I mean, I have no problem with bands doing covers (I'm sure other people just like Etheridge's version better. It's a matter of taste. And she's not really a song stealer, because she probably had either the label or bands permission)

I just think its sad when an artists uses the cover as a single...then it's like "Wow, that shows your musical talent."

So really, song stealer is a little rough...

Artists are doing it ALL the time...

Probably the biggest example I can think of is Garth Brooks Baton Rouge...(I'm not a country fan btw). A band did that song, not really got popular. He did it, became a sensation.

Such is the way of the music business.

I agree it is getting worse though, it seems like that's all more and more artists are doing...taking old songs and adding their 'touch'

Jet is a cover band, aren't they? Who are they covering? Same question for The Darkness.

Also, since when was Melissa Etheridge a "big name" in the music industry? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

uh, just the fact that her name's on a gaming forum when she's no one's friend doesn't ring a bell?

Oh, and a Cover band that makes money should burn in ****ing hell while being whipped for all eternity by a naked sumo wrestler.

Forgot to note, by making money, I was meaning the big "professional" (yeah right...) bands that get radio air and that are idolized by countless musically deaf drones.

I see nothing wrong with a cover band. So what if a band enjoys playing songs they didn't write?

I've heard cover songs done that sounded better than the original, even.

Of course, go the easy way and make it big with a song you didn't write. makes complete sense to me....

THANK YOU!
I really really really really really hate Jet. I actually hate the band.
They don't even have the decency to cover songs, they just steal them and call them their own.

I don't mind when bands release covers for videos or singles.
How about Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt? That is a single with a video. The Beatles' version of Twist and Shout was a single.

Something I forgot: covers can have value to them. Some times a different musician can add something special to a song. I'm sure Tracer knows what I'm talking about.

In jazz, nobody covers anything - songs just gradually become part of the jazz canon, played by everybody...I'm more of a jazz player than anything else, so that's probably why I see nothing wrong with the concept of a cover band.

Yep, that's what I meant.
It used to be like that in rock and roll too, but that's partially because bands didn't write their own songs. The Beatles were quite different from the norm because they mostly played their own stuff.

Good covers:
Snake River Conspiracy - Love Song
No Doubt - It's My Life

Covers that suck horribly:
311 - Love Song

I'll think of more later.
