Help me choose a guitar

Here's the background:
I've had a $70 Yamaha Acoustic guitar since I was eight or so. I've never really bothered getting anything else, as I never really learned to play.

Well, while in college I've had some time to play, so I took out the old guitar again. I've gotten to the point where it is more holding me back than helping me. Most of that comes from it being a beginner's guitar with below-average construction. It gets a lot of fret buzzing.

Also, one of my friends wrote a lot of songs, and him, myself, and a few other friends have been holding jam sessions. I'm the only person (other than the drummer) without a proper instrument. So I'm looking to get a good-quality electric guitar.

I'm looking to spend $400-600 on guitar, amp, and maybe a good pedal. Hopefully on the lower end of that, but I don't care if it goes higher. I'm not exactly sure what I want right now either. Sure I'd like a big-name guitar like Fender or Gibson, but I have a soft spot for old-style guitars as well. I have a Danelectro leaflet that sells such guitars, but they seem like entry-level guitars. Also, their website does not list guitars as products they make, and I can't find an online vendor with Danelectro guitars, just their effects pedals.

So I guess what I'm looking for is a nice, mid to upper mid-range quality guitar with either a nice warm sound or an old Blue's style twang. Preferably a brand that I could find at the local music store and try out. I'll also be in the market for a decent amp, but I have fewer clues as to what I should get here.

What brands do you use/recommend, and what is good about them?

Personally, I would go with the Fender Strat. I got mine for about $600.
Its a very warm sounding insturment. If you can, go for the American version, its constructed better than the Mexican version.
