I'll grab a Metallica solo before Seb can:

Nothing Else Matters - simple, yet completes the song SO well

Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing - the second solo (outro) stays in my head all day when I hear it

Sonata Arctica - Full Moon - the solo going back and forth betweeen the guitar and keyboards, and fininshing together. Really awesome.

My favourite solos growing up were always Guns N Roses - Dont Cry and Metallica - Nothing Else Matters. Havent really paid much attention to solos since... It's all about the vocals [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Too many to count, seriously. It's like asking me to choose between my fifty children. For the purposes of this thread, I shall choosse three. But I assure you, there are many more.

1. 25 or 6 to 4- Chicago - Best use of wah-wah pedal on record EVER

2. Comfortably Number- Pink Floyd- The first solo is really good, but the second is one of the best.

3. Stairway to Heaven- Led Zeppelin - The solo caps off an amazing song and brings it home.

Pink Floyd - The Fletcher Memorial Home

Not the most positively breathtaking guitar solos I've ever heard, but certainly THE BEST, in my opinion.

I don't think Seb would choose a Metallica solo...

Anyways...

Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing
Bon Jovi - Dry County
Europe - Superstitious
Metallica - Fade to Black
Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine
Alice Cooper - Poison

There is this awesome 10 minute live version of that song... It makes the solo in the regular version look like the guitar work in Nirvana...

I think Dry County by Bon Jovi has a pretty great solo, too.

A lot of Pink Floyd, most definately.

If you ever download that reunion concert of them playing Comfortably Numb, there's a great long solo for most of the song, it's really superb.

Some versions of Shine On You Crazy Diamond are fantastic as well

Oh, thanks for reminding me. The solo to Nirvana's cover of The Man Who Sold the World is quite the cool.
Let's see...
The Replacements- I Will Dare (played by Peter Buck from REM)
Television- Marquee Moon
The Beatles- Let it Be
Toad the Wet Spocket- I Will Not Take These Things For Granted
Burlap to Cashmere- Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth
Radiohead- High and Dry

lordvader did a solo from Master of Puppets a while back, which was pretty good.
A lot of the older metallica songs (particularly Puppets and Justice) have solos I like a lot.

Brian May's (Queen) solo in These are the days of our lives. It's short, full of emotion, and fits the song like no other solo. Technically brilliant, but not flashy.

If you want flashy I like Brighton Rock, which when played live is just a nine minute echo filled solo [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

it sounds nice, but it's incredibly simple and easy, the cello really brings out the best of that part

Yes, it's incredibly simple and easy. I don't have a problem with that.
I agree about the cello adding a lot. But still, it is great.
David Bowie's Space Oddity has quite a nice solo.

Classical Gas is Mason Williams' song, but was covered by Eric Clapton. I prefer Clapton's version, he plays alone instead of with a band like Williams.

Yea, the live version of Sultans Of Swing makes the normal studio look even worse then nirvanas guitar work, like something from simple plan.

Children Of Bodom - Kissing The Shadows

No solo tops this.

Oh, and CoW, You don't have to worry about me stealing a metallica solo, I despise them all except for "One".

1. Pink Floyd... all solos should be compared to David Gilmour's blues influenced brilliance

2. Van Halen, Eruption... dont like VH, but I know a good solo when I hear one.

3. Jethro Tull, Minstrel in the Gallery

4. Rush... hmmm, but which one?

5. Smashing Pumpkins, Silverf***/Jackboot (live)

Gah... there's too many good ones to mention... we have your Frank Zappa, Zeplin, Yes, Radiohead, Jeff Beck, Robin Trower...
