Sound is caused by vibrations.
Synthesizers work by simulating a vibration with a "oscillator". Common type of oscillators include sine, saw, pulse, inv-saw, and square. Less common ones include white-noise, generic-noise, pink-noise, and variations of the other previously mentioned ones.
