First song from my band
2004-06-21, 8:12 AM #1
Just recorded and mixed our first song in my band, and I think it turned out pretty good for doing it all in my basement. I can't really describe the sound, but it's kinda like Brand New. We're working on a new song right now, and will probably be done by next week.

We don't have a band name yet, so maybe you guys could throw some ideas at me. Also, I'm at drums and I mixed the entire thing. Sorry about the file size... it's 256 kbps, and 5 MB. Tell me what you think.

I like the song.

Some recording advice:
The drums are a bit too loud, (mostly just the hihat). I know it's *really* hard to mic the drums without the hihat being overpowering. What I do (if I'm using only two mics) is put a boom stand in front of the set, put the arm between the toms, and aim the mic so it's between the left tom and the snare. The downside to that is that the left symbol(s) become weaker. If you use three or more mics, you can fix that (but the hihat problem might reoccur). Just experiment. The setup may vary since each drummer sets up a bit differently.

For vocals, the mic will pick up P sounds in words really loud. The solution is to either back up away from the mic, or have the mic below your lips a bit, aimed upword, so that when you say a word with a P sound, the air doesn't blow into the mic. This is probably better than just being back from the mic, because you don't loose any sound. You also might try one of those foam things you put over the mic. (I can't remember if they even help that much, though.)

But it definitely sounds good for basement recording.

Band Names:

Anonymously Unknown

If you have no name you might as well stick to it [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

I used GoldWave to remove most of the pops and clicks, but yeah, I do notice it a lot. I might try to get our singer to redo the vocals.

Your advice DogSRoOL is awesome... I'll definitely being doing that stuff, especially for the vocals.

Goldwave doesn't really do much for pops & clicks (although I haven't experimented with its effects at higher bitrates & frequencies).

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the older version of Goldwave did a much better job with sound quality when it processed effects and filters.

It's a good first song. I think you should call your band Whelly.

Your singer is surprisingly good (dunno if it is you, meant to post earlier but now i forgot what all you wrote). Around here all the bands suck all around but most of all their singers are horrible. Good job, sounds good.

I love the random outbursts of controlled distortion, it sounds awesome.

Apart from that, the song is very musically good, just not the kinda thing i'd listen to.

Good job, you're drumming is top notch too, not too heavy for the genre but not to sparse of repetitive either.
