Methinks I need to learn more riffs...
2004-07-14, 4:28 PM #1
For quite some time, all my impromptu guitar solos and riffs have been more or less the same. Sure, you could call that my personal style, but when I get bored with my own playing, it becomes a problem. So I need some suggestions for some songs with interesting riffs to learn and/or websites to teach some new riffs (preferrably the latter).

[And please don't suggest songs loaded down with swearing or about some guy and his ho'. I consider it crap regardless of the musical quality.]

?

That's strange, because if I had to name one characteristic about jazz is that it's varied/interesting. That's not even a matter of personal taste. The number of substyles is demented, as in LARGE.

Of course you don't have to like it, but if anything, jazz IS objectively interesting.

Jazz can be anything, so long it fits the boundaries of jazz-style, and even then, you can roam and do whatever the **** you please.

Anyway, on to riffage... Iced Earth songs, namely, Wolf, Dante's Inferno, Angel's Holocaust, Stormrider. Stuff that will eventually get your rythm picking very sharp and regular, while being able to add that jumpy feeling.

I'm talking about songs that just consist largely of swearing. I don't really have a problem with a song that uses it here or there.
That's why I said "...loaded down with swearing." [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Learning Jazz is the single most bestest thing you can do to improve your soloing. And no, I'm not exaggerating at all. But if you don't find it interesting, it'd simply be a chore to learn. So....damn. G'luck! =D

Actually, if you spend some time memorizing scales/key signatures and practice appegios and a couple other exercises, you could improve your soloing and riffing a ton, too. This would be advisable against just learning more riffs from other bands, as it's actually applicable.

I know my scales. But playing impromptu requires a bit more than that. 90% of my playing is made up on-the-spot, so I need to have a bit more in my mind. The most successful technique for me is 'riff compilation'. If I try just using my knowledge of scales, it usually sounds horrid.

There's a couple things you can do. Play-along books (that come with CDs) in the style you like can be helpful. Personally though, I prefer this Band-in-a-Box program...you type in the changes to a song, pick the style, and it does a pretty good job of being a band.

There's two parts to getting better at improvising: knowing the theory and putting in the practise. If you're already knowledgable about music (or are super-talented) you just need to jam with other people or play against a recording of yourself.

If you have the motivation, you could just lift licks from good soloists.

oh and learn to play Cold from At the Gates. it has a good solo, some nice sounding riffs, and no cursing. But then again if your not into death metal you might not be able to undertsnad the lyrics at all.

^Beat me to it.

I think it's pretty sweet (especially if you don't have a rhythm section that's better than you to jam with every day). It does a whole bunch of stuff I don't even use, or know how to use - I just enter in chord changes and go. It's got hundreds of styles (I use about three), and all sorts of other stuff. You can set it to take solos to, which is kind of fun/funny.

No kidding? I thought all the references to God and salvation and Christ meant something else.
I did some research on the band and discovered that they are no longer Christian. After having found that out, I don't get the feeling I was getting... which makes no sense. *shrug*

You can build solos out of basic powerchord structures too. But it'll make you reliant on the box pattern.

I dont do riffs, I do vocal melodies.

Yay! My "stretchability" has already increased. I can play across 5 of the smaller frets without straining myself or sliding. That'll make all those formerly impossible things I've tried much easier!
