You mean a an actual MIDI keyboard with keys, like piano keys? Or like a regular computer keyboard?

Banks and banks of humming machinery! I've never seen so many knobs. We're going to have to do something, Charlie! Try pushing that button there. No? How about that one? No, not that one either. I know! I'll try pushing this one. Hold my hat will you? Good fellow.

Most music composition software worth your time doesn't require a keyboard.

Fruity Loops/Studio
Cubase VST/SX
Nuendo
Reason 2.5
Jeskola Buzz (free)
Logic Audio
Pro Tools LE
You can even use Acid Pro for composition

You only need a keyboard if you want to record a live performance or to enter notes more quickly.

The above programs are great. You could check out Noteworthy Composer, and Guitar Pro 4 if you play guitar (it lets you tab out your arrangements)

Thanx for your suguestions I'll look into the non-guitar options (sorry, but i'm a percussionist).

As far as the keyboard goes, i'm talking about musical keyboards (piano-style), not your standard computer keyboard. sorry about the confusion.

Yeah, for percussion, I'd suggest Fruity too. Quite a few guitarists here use Fruity for their drum tracks if I'm not mistaken.

Problem with Fruityloops is that my comp has too little RAM for it to run... well enough to even play a song much less make one.

I'm also in need of a program that will spit out sheet music when you're done.

With these new criteria in mind, any suguestioons? (btw, i'm a "Percussionist", but i play auxillary. I havn't touched a drumset in nearly 5 years. blasted teachers and their medling music programs [http://forums.massassi.net/html/mad.gif] )

Forsakahn - try Finale.

Seb - try sfz (free VST, Google it) with your favourite audio app, along with the ns_kit SoundFont. Create a new track and load the sfz plugin as an effect. Load the SoundFont, then change the output of the channel 10 midi track to point to sfz. Bingo [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Hey BTW, SampleTank 2 FREE (Free VST) has one or two drum kits that could be useful.
