Is Rock/Metal dead?
2004-08-10, 9:53 PM #1
I was listening to the radio today (the local station is KROQ 106.7 FM) and I was wondering whatever happened to metal. The metal of yesterday was so good, so timeless, frrom Pink floyd to classic motorhead, to zepplin, to 80's hair metal like Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, motely crue, ac/dc, to good bands from the '90s like Rob zombie, and classic metallica that spans all those decades.

What the hell happened? Instead of songs that people will still listen to 20 years or more down the road, what you get now are angsty, scream-filled songs published by artists that sound so similar, and that are as manufactured as pop music is.

*spits in disgust*

Has metal peaked? the good artists are all unsigned and the radio waves are flooded with
music that is the b@stard offspring of a fusion of metal and hip-hop.

Lyrics also suck. it's all about peole that are depressed and its all the "poor me, i hate the world b/c they don't like me" angsty s***. I hate all those emo scumbags b/c their worldview radically goes against what i am. Take the Emo mindset, spin it around 180 degrees, and you have me and the way I think.
I prefer lyrics that are empowering and uplifting.

Is rock destined to go the way of disco? What metal has become sure as hel lisn't the metal i grew up hearing, not by a long shot.

What do you guys think about this?

Been doing the same 'classic rock sound' for ages...

http://www.tourniquet.net/audio/01__PsychoSurgery.mp3 <-- From their first album

http://www.tourniquet.net/audio/04__Vitals_Fading.mp3 <-- From their first album

Metal is still alive, it's just a different type. You can still find some modern 'classic rock' bands but you need to look a bit harder.

True, but perhaps i should rephrase: Am I the only one that doesn't like the direction that
metal is currently headed? I believe that quality consistency with the classics is key. Sure, deviation is allowed and is good, but people are beeing to liberal with it, like pracitcally designatiing any song that has a few coherent guitar chords as metal.

Metal follows the youth. and is in no way dying. why do you think there are constantly metal festivals all over? music is definitely not only CD sales, that's business. with most genres, and especially metal, their charms really come out in live shows. Just because your hear ****ty metal on the radio doesn't mean that's what metal has become. You'd be surprised at the amount of skill the musicians today have. stop living in the past, and research your bands.

What an incredibly condescending attitude, Page, though I'm not surprised. When it comes to matters about which you have a strong opinion, you generally are condescending toward those that disagree with you.

People have different tastes than you. Did it occur to you that your "empowering and uplifting" music is simply seen as naive and blind to the fact that not every cloud has a silver lining?

Take your "it can't rain every day" attitude, spin it around 180 degrees, and you have the way other people think. Wow. How stupid and self-centered does that sound?

The world does not revolve around you. People are going to disagree with you. If you really have a problem with other people's music, learn some God-damned tact. You have to share the world with the rest of us, and I'm sorry if we don't cater to your every taste.

Oh, whoops. Is that too politically correct?

^ exactly.

Also, I'm sick of people whining that "all music today sucks", and so-called "manifactured pop bands" who supposedly all sound the same. In the same sense, you could say all classic rock bands sound the same.

Two bands can sound alike. You know what we call that? GENRES. Jee, I'm really sorry that not all music is classic rock. I guess you're gonna have to learn to live with that.

Different people have different tastes. That's why different kinds of music exist. What's popular today is popular because alot of people like it. That's the definition of pop music.

For f***'s sake, quit being so narrow-minded, and get rid of that "OMQ EVERYTHING I DON'T LIKE SUCKS"-attitude. It's very annoying and disrespectful.

Don't forget about metal, the same is pretty much true for metal.

Metal has been around for ages and ages, of course definitely not as long as rocks, but as time goes by we keep getting more metal, stronger metal, better metal, but even so, the metal has been getting lighter... but of course is that really a bad thing?

I believe mister yoshi is referring to mainstream or "nu" metal. Which I suspect is what this thread is about,

Most of the good rock and metal these days is from obscure or relatively unknown bands which you only really hear about by word of mouth, or reputation if you happen to play an instrument.

I believe what Pagewizard was talking about, and I agree if i'm right, is that these days the majority of mainstream rock and metal is quite negative and angsty as opposed to the late 70s, 80s and early 90s where there were popular bands who wrote positive music AND had talented musicians. Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi) may not be a guitar hero, but i'd argue that's he's pretty talented and wrote some awesome solos.

Well if people stopped seeing metal as angsty and aggressive it'd help. It's music like every other genre, and well made metal is -not- noise.

I want less "thrashing", more amazingly structured and planned out solos. Led Zeppelin is a very good example of what I'd love to see in a new metal band--their solos are asskicking, without it seeming as if the artist is compensating for something with the complexity of his solo. Okay, you can play the guitar well. Now make something OF that guitar-playing.

In other words, I hate "death", "goth", or any other random and worthless metal, and basically all new metal bands (including Tool, which I blame for the beginning of the crappy-rock-angst-voice phase. Damn you Maynard, damn you to hell)

I would try out Lacuna coil, but I've recently decided that I'm just giving up on metal. It's worthless to attempt to find anything I like in today's music.

The fact you hate it doesn't make it worthless. In fact, many of the bands you hate KNOW what they're doing, just because they're not a copy of Led or any other old classic rock band doesn't make them crappy. Hell, it's all for the better, it's called innovation.

You're doing pretty much the same thing old folks do to the music you oh so love.

I know they know what they're doing--and I'm not doing anything to music. I'm not judging it, if that's your thing, fine, but that's most DEFINITELY not mine. Mindless thrashing at whim or way-too-complex guitar solos are stupid(imo) and make the player of the guitar seem like he's just having a seizure while playing. The well constructed, well--wait, I'm repeating myself. If I'm having to do that that means you DIDN'T READ MY POST.

And to be honest, lately I've listened to all of 5 bands--Explosions in the Sky, Led Zeppelin, Streetlight Manifesto, Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution, and Pink Floyd. Because their music is just so damned enjoyable.

Hey, I never claimed to be unbiased. AND I wasn't being entirely serious. Honestly, I don't care what Dj Yoshi listens to. If he honestly enjoys metal, more power to him.
I don't like the way people who like metal get so self-important over it, but I'm, also aware that I can be like that too sometimes.
I just exaggerate my opinions sometimes.
