I know some people are fans of them here.
So, who likes them? I think they're up there with The Beatles in terms of influence and everything else.

I'd probably rate their albums:
VU and Nico
Loaded
VU
White Light/White Heat

I listened to one of their songs today. Something like "we're going to have a good time."

The music was nice but the lyrics seemed lacking creativity. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Banks and banks of humming machinery! I've never seen so many knobs. We're going to have to do something, Charlie! Try pushing that button there. No? How about that one? No, not that one either. I know! I'll try pushing this one. Hold my hat will you? Good fellow.

Lyrics lacking creativity?!?!?! *head explodes*

The lyrics to Venus in Furs really creep me out. Although it's not as bad since I found out that it's not based on personal experience but based on a book.

Lou Reed's solo albums are also great. Transformer rules.

I LOVE the Velvets, Heroin and Stephanie Says are definately some of my favorite songs of all time.

It's really a shame they didn't get as big as they should have been, not even to this day.

Yeah, the Velvets have always been underground. But they are a lot more well thought of now than they used to be.

I haven't heard Stephanie Says. I love Heroin though. (yeah, I know. Ha ha)
Sweet Jane is another one of my favorites.

Anyone wanna dispute my album preference order? I expected people would disagree with it.

On another note, Femme Fatale has to be one of the most covered songs ever. I've heard covers by Big Star, REM, and Yo La Tengo.

I started listening to them two years ago when my dad randomly bought the CD when recalling his past. Neither of us had any idea it had such a big following now... Infact I don't know if he does now, even.

There's a whole bunch of bands that no one cared about when they were around, but have come to have cult followings.
Big Star comes to mind. I'm not sure, but Robert Johnson might qualify as well.

WTF? I don't remember quoting myself.

Well, maybe they were, but critics hated them. They weren't respected until later.

I think I clicked the quote button instead of the edit button.

didn't they get their name from the fact that one person said they would be about as successful as a Lead Zeppelin?

thats the story i heard anyway.

I saw a Velvet Underground videoclip on Rage the other day (after Franz Ferdinand played about fifteen of their own video clips in a row... how many albums do they have, anyway? Someone ought to assassinate them. That'd teach Austria!) and was interested to note that Lou Reed actually made a sincere attempt at singing, unlike in "Walk on the Wild Side" or "Dirty Boulevard", which I've heard on the radio.

Someone pitched an idea for a band name, and Keith Moon said "that would go over like a lead balloon!"
And of course the Led spelling was so people wouldn't pronounce Lead as in the kind where you lead someone somewhere.

FF only have one album. Assassinate them? That might start a world war or something!

Lou Reed has a sort of talk-sing style. I guess some people might not like it, but it doesn't bother me. He actually sings on his solo song "Perfect Day" which was on the Trainspotting soundtrack. He actually croons in that song.
Their are other songs where he sings more melodically, but Perfect Day comes most to mind.

I completely forgot about that. I actually think that song's pretty good.

Really? You actually like a song that I like? (I'm Talon from TACC, btw)
I like that song a lot. It's very Brian Wilson-esque.
