Cheap but good sounding drum kits.

Can anyone recommend me any good drum kit/cymbal makes/series? I'm playing in a metal band, and for the moment, I'd need a largish bass, a snare, 3xtom, high-hats, ride and at least one crash.

I currently use a Mapex M series, and whilst it's very nice, I don't technically own it (it belongs to my church, but I'm the only one who can play it), so it can't be moved from the church to other places because of insurance reasons.

Pearl for drumheads, Zildjian for symbals. I'm trying to remember the name of another drumhead brand I liked, but can't think of it off the top of my head.

A while back, I came across an electric kit that was amazingly realistic sounding (down to rimshots and tone shaping depending where you hit the drumpad, like a real acoustic set, and perfect sounding symbals), but I forgot that, too. :(

Pearl/Zildjian were what I was originally looking at, but they aren't exactly cheap.

I'd investigate buying an used set. I was able to get my fairly decent set for about $300.

Does 'used' get an 'an'? I don't think so...
2004-09-07, 7:55 PM #8
Haha, that's funny you mention that because I debated that myself. I thought it did because 'u' was a vowel. Upon further investigation, I've found you to be correct.

Anyway, don't let my poor grammar derail this topic. ;)

I think you technically could you an "an". It's just that the 'u' in 'used' is pronounced beginning with a consonant sound, so it sounds funny.

I've seen some used Tama kits for not too much $$$ around here. Cymbals - either Sabian or Zyljian. I prefers the Z's, but my drummer plays mostly Sabians and they sound pretty good.

Well, you could always steal your equipment. It worked for The Sex Pisols and John Lennon.

I'll send you my great grandpa's drum kit, created in 1879. Mwa.

That would be awesome!
There could be a gimmick band and you'd have to have a girl in it, but you could call it "Anne Teek and the Vintages" and only use instruments made in the 19th century!

^ That's actually a really cool idea. I would love to listen to that...

I've been drumming for 2 years, and I'm pretty experienced with all things drumming. I got my first set from a friend for only $150, and it was in fine condition. You can get a good price on a used set. I think Zyljian cymbals aren't that great, and I prefer Sambian over them.

Bwa ha ha! I shall start writing a song....
Let's see... what would a 19th century person write a song about...
I got it!

Cruisin down the dirt road in my brand new horseless carriage
zipping right by at 8 miles an hour
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

This is harder than I thought.

Well... if you're in the deep south, you could write a love song to your cousin.

I don't even think the word "yeah" was invented yet.

"Verily" doesn't fit the meter as well.
