only hes my favorite guitarist ever. Jimi Hendrix is the #1 guitarist in the entire world!!!!!

so what do you think of Jimi Hendrix

ps: thats the last photo ever taken of him.

He's good, but I wouldn't say he's number 1.

Joe Satriani
Eddie Van Halen

There are other great guitarists. I don't think I could pick a number 1.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

...oh, and this should probably be in the music forum, I would think.

first of all eddie van halen is not good (my opinion) they arent classic rock, and second of all this is discussion about him, we arent actually talking about music in general.

From what my guitarist friends tell me, Hendrix was not that great a guitarist.

Opinion:
There are plenty of other guitarists far more skilled both technically and in the art of songwriting. He's not bad, but he's just not the almighty legend he's made out to be - he just happened to be around at the right time.

He's awesome and cool and stuff.

Jimi Hendrix is AMAZING. I listen to his album(s) whenever I get a chance, but that's not often. In my opinion, Satriani doesn't even compare.

Not everyone in the world thinks Hendrix was the best guitarist ever in the world, get over it.

Hendrix was good, but not as good as people make him sound.

Hendrix was good, but I wouldnt call him The Best. That honor is reserved for Jimmy Page... ;)

It sucks he died at such a young age (27), then again drugs can do that to a person.

Half the reason he was so cool was because he played left-handed on a right-handed guitar so he could do some really wierd cords that other people couldn't do.

Jimi Hendrix was an amazing guitarist. Anyone who says otherwise is full of it.
But I don't think he's the best, and he certainly isn't my favorite.

Petrucci.

Hendrix really isn't all that great. he makes good songs. but he's definitely not the best guitar player. and saying that satriani doesn't compare... well, ~cough~

One has been churning out good albums for nearly two decades, and the other's done funky-bluesy-rockish songs, which are good, but definitely not as challenging or developped as anything Satriani, Vai, or Petrucci would do. And by developped I don't mean only sheer speed, but I mean every little color and variation in the playing that makes it unique.

^^^ what he said. Hendrix was great, in his time. But others have come along that blow Hendrix away.

Satriani is god. Anyone who doesn't think so can munch on my ***.

i agree with all you, jimmy page is one hell of a good guiarist, BUT he could get sloppy, just sometimes, that why hes #2

:D :D

im talking about classic rock, i have no idea who petrucci and those other people are.
2004-09-25, 7:27 PM #23
They're boring metal guitarists.

My favorite guitarists are:
Johnny Marr
Peter Buck
Todd Nichols
Mick Ronson

Mick Ronson is really the only one who comes close to "classic rock" though.

Hendrix, what a legend, he didn't need to play pretentious fiddly crap in order to be a showoff like most the other guitarists mentioned here, he just played the best sounding blues riffage ever.... i could listen all day.

1. Jimmy Page
2. Brian May
3. Chuck Berry

'Nuff said.

You might have something with Chuck Berry.
I don't think that he's got anything on Jimi though.

Actually, I don't think you can really compare any of these guitarists to each other. They're too different.

Johnny B Goode has such a fantastic riff though.

...and once again all I have to add to the discussion is that there's more to guitar than rock music. I'll throw my few names out since that's what people seem to be doing:

Lenny Breau
Jim Hall
Wes Montgomery

Of course there's more to the guitar than rock music. But most of us listen primarily to rock.

Jazz is an acquired taste, and it takes a certain kind of person to invest the time and money into it. Obviously, you are that kind of person.

Yeah, I know I'm being a bit of a jerk by saying that, and I didn't even mention any outstanding classical players like John Williams or Julian Breem or Norbert Kraft, or even Andres Segovia (who among other things is responsible for standard tuning). I guess when you see these polls you sort of know they really mean "best pop/rock guitarist", but it sort of irks me when people totally ignore other genres of music.

I don't blame you.
I don't think the Massassi demographic would include a lot of people you can have meaningful discussions of jazz and classical with. :)

If you have any suggestions for a good song, I'll give it a listen. I don't know much jazz besides a little Louis Armstrong and Astrud Gilberto (she's more pop-jazz, I think though). I also have a handful of Django Reindhart songs on my computer.

Kind of an unfair comparison since Hendrix is dead. He was revolutionary in his time and probably would have continued to crank out some amazing stuff if he didn't die at such a young age.

When Hedrix was playing, there was no doubt in my mind that he was the best. All the other guitarists mentioned here have had the benefit of Hendrix's contributions

I almost said the same thing as you did Avenger. I agree with you. The fact is that we can't compare their skills now since Jimi is dead. It would just be speculation.

Tracer, sorry, another thing. When I asked you to name a good jazz song for me to listen to, my intent was to download it for free off a p2p program. If you have a problem with that then I understand if you don't want to name a song.
But I would be interested in giving Louis Armstrong a listen.
I could post a list of his cds that my dad owns and you can tell me if any are good, if you know.

Would you be willing to do that?

I agree with this, but I can't begin to pick a #1 out of all those fabulous guitar players. Brian May, Jimmy Page, Satch, Vai, Eddie Van Halen (who I just saw in Houston and HE ROCKED!), Stevie Ray Vaughan, Alex Lifeson, Neal Schon, Steve Perry, and other such big names are all of my influences and so it is kind of hard to pick just one.
