Tom Waits

Any fans of Tom Waits here?
I don't know how to describe him. He's kind of an anti-singer songwriter.
His music spans all over the place: Piano ballads, blues, jazz, etc. and he has a voice that's kind of like Louis Armstrong's would sound like if he swallowed razor blades.

A lot of his lyrics are really strange. He sings about pirates, side show freaks, ghosts, insane people, and all sorts of other weird stuff.

I hear he's done guest appearances in some Primus songs, and he's had Les Claypool play bass on at least one of his. He is also in the movie Mystery Men, but I haven't seen it so I don't know how much of a role he has.

You can download some of his songs for free here at Amazon. I'd recommend Alice and Hold On.

Interesting. On his website it lists covers of his songs, and here are some of the interesting ones...

"Martha" was covered by Tim Buckley
"Down There By The Train" was covered by Johnny Cash
"Downtown" was covered by Alex Chilton
"Heartattack and Vine" was covered by Popa Chubby
"Ol' 55" was covered by The Eagles and (seperately) Sarah McLachlan
"Cemetary Polka" was covered by Primus
"I Don't Want to Grow Up" was covered by The Ramones
"Jersey Girl" was covered by Bruce Springsteen
"Hang on St. Christopher", "Downtown Train", and "Tom Traubert's Blues" were covered by Rod Stewart
"Step Right Up" was covered by the Violent Femmes

That's a good variety of fans, if you ask me.

The songs from Amazon are also here, if you don't want to register with Amazon. You can also see 2 of his music videos at this site, the one for "God's Away on Business" is weird.

Martha was also covered by Meatloaf.

I haven't heard much but what I have heard, I like.

I love the song they used in Shrek 2, "A Little Drop of Poison."

He recently released an album. I hear it's not his best, but it's good. He does a lot of human beatboxing on it.

I've heard a few of his songs that I really like. Can you recommend a particular album?

Which songs?

Raindogs is considered by most to be his best. I have Raindogs, Mule Variations, and Alice. All are good.

Raindogs has more percussive instruments and piano stuff.

Mule Variations is like his southern album. It has a very turn-of-the-20th-century plantation feel to it (like in the video for hold on). It has country, blues, piano-ballad type stuff, and some tin-pan alley type stuff.

Alice has sort of the night city/carnival type feel.

You can check out what AMG says about his albums here.
