Looking to get into playing...
Can anyone recomend first, a good starting guitar (price range under 300)
and secondly some good songs to practice on

I don't know much about guitars, but do you want acoustic or electric? I'd recommend learning on a steel string acoustic.

Acoustics... I can't really say, Electrics, I found that a Fender Squire was quite a good guitar

You can get a cheap Fender Strat for that much, dont bother with the squire.

As for acoustics, check out the Fender or Epiphone Dreadnaughts. It's pretty much your basic guitar. Stay away from Ovation, they sound like poopie.

Start to play on steel string acoustic, and after 4 years you'll be playing like a pro.
