I'd recommend anything before their self-titled album.

Load and Reload were great, people need to stop complaining. I enjoy ALL the metallica CD's, even the new one. The new CD is more thrash then what they used to be. I garuntee if the CD was released under another name, people would of enjoyed the CD more..but since it's Metallica, WTF OMG THIS SUXZ BAD!

The music they've made is good. The only problem with it is that they crossed the thrash metal barrier into southern rock with load and re-load. Then they tried to rejoin the thrash metal community with st. anger. People didn't like this because they thought it was a pathetic attempt to regain acceptance. I didn't like st. anger as much as I thought I would, simply because there weren't any guitar solos, the sound was horrible, and some of the songs were too repetitive. I'd say that metallica would still have the popularity today that they had 15 years ago just as long as they stayed with their style. But who knows, megadeth stayed with their style for the most part, and their new album did marginally on charts and sales. I like both bands a lot, it just depends on what mood I'm in that decides which one I like more. Lately, it's been megadeth, although I'm pissed off that mustaine is getting rid of all of the old members. Doesn't he realize that they made the band good, too? I just like rock/metal music in general, so don't go saying that "Megadeth sucks!" if you like metallica, or "Metallica sucks!" if you like megadeth, because they're both really good metal bands. I know that they've had their conflicting pasts and I've read all about it. They've been rivals since mustaine was kicked out of metallica before kill em all was released. Mustaine says he wrote/co-wrote several of metallica's songs (most notably, The Mechanix (megadeth)/The Four Horsemen(metallica)). And who knows if it's true or not. Both bands will claim it true or deny it to the death, and no one will no for sure except for james hetfield, lars ulrich, and dave mustaine.
Who made you God to say "I'll take your life from you"?

I didn't like the music as much on St. Anger, but the lyrics are really good. Some of the songs have a lot of meaning, especially when you consider what was going on at the time they were trying to record the album.

Ride the Lightning
Master of Puppets
Load
Reload
S&M - This one's my favorite, a live album with the SF Symphony. It's amazing.

i hate metallica but some of their tunes from Kill 'Em All make me tap my foot, i remember track 1 being quite enjoyable.

Kill 'em All is pretty good, but there's not as much melody to is as I like.

Ride the Lightning is pretty good. A lot more musical music; most of the songs on it are great. The actual sound isn't so great, though.

Master of Puppets is, in my opinion, the best thrash metal album ever. Every single song on there is awesome. Awesome production as well.

...And Justice for All is the last CD where Metallica seemed to be using the influence that Cliff Burton brought to the band: Though he was killed before this CD was made, it seems that a lot of his musical ideas were used. This CD is as close as Metallica ever got to progressive metal.

Black Album: It's pretty good but bah.

Definately check out Megadeth. Their new CD, The System Has Failed, goes against the trend of bands that used to be good putting out terrible CDs. It's one of my favorite Megadeth CDs. Also check out Rust in Peace.

slayers Reign In Blood album would be a worthwhile investment for you too.

Of the primary cds they have released, I still don't have Kill Em All, Load, or St Anger.

But of the ones I do have, I strongly recommend
  • Ride the Lightning
  • Master of Puppets
  • ...And Justice for All
  • Metallica*
  • S&M

* - Album "Metallica" is my least favorite of the selection I made above, but it's still worth listening to.

Btw, MP3.com had a review of ...And justice for all

The most sophisticated album in their career, this is also the first full-length release to feature ex-Flotsam & Jetsam bassist Jason Newsted. The thin sound quality stops this from being a masterpiece.

What the heck does he mean by "thin sound quality"? The songs were recorded digitally, which is significantly higher quality than analog tapes. And either way, I thought it was much clearer and better-sounding than the ones before it. I'm confused...

You can't hear the bass at all in the mix. Hetfield's guitar sounds on Justice have so much bass that in mixing, there wasn't much room for Jason. :P

it means the noticeable lack of bassiness, the album does sound quite tinny.

jesus christ my metallica knowledge is more extensive than it should be for a band i really really dislike strongly.

Same here.

Oh, ok. thx.
But there's surely a better way of saying "absence/lackiness of bass"

Regardless, Puppets is my favorite, then Justice follows. Lightning and S&M come in tied at third. I rarely ever listen to ReLoad or Garage Inc., so imo these are the last ones you'd want to get (If you're seeking to Get 'em All that is :) ;)).

Heh, I like the way this critic puts it, though I can neither agree nor disagree, not having the cd and all...
"'Load' is more accurately named 'Load of crap'"

love it or hate it, everyone knows metallica.

Personally I love anything pre black album, but i've also learned to appreciate somewhat the songs on latter albums, not as metallica songs per-se (Master of Puppets will never be bested), but still good songs in themselves, if you forget who's playing them.

All in all, they're solid musicians, but their composition sucks lately compared to what they used to do.

One thing Metallica is very good at, particularly Lars Ulrich who handles most of this, is the actual structure and arrangment of songs. It works very well.

I love metallica, anything beyond the black album, though, i don't listen to it.

Kill'em All is a great album. You can tell that it is a their first album because the song writing isn't great. But there are some really good songs. Four horsemen, Anesthia, Seek & Destory are easily the best songs on the album. Shame Mustaine got kicked out, but i guess metallica might not have been the same if he was still in it. And Megadeth would have never been formed, which would have sucked.

Ride The Lightning is the my second favorite Album. First album with Kirk Hammet! Yeah! Ride The Lightning, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Fade to Black, Creeping Death, and Call of the Ktulu are the best ones here. Creeping Death is my favorite, just for the Die by my hand part (it is awesome in concerts)

Master of Puppets is the best album ever. Every single song is good except The Thing That Should Not Be, which is good, but is repetitive. Orion is my favorite song on the album.

..And Justice for all is my least favorite of the early days. The reason is, i'm a bassist, and there's no bass. Whats up with that. I still love One though. Hell of a good song.

Black Album is a good album in my opion contrary of what other people believe. It's slower than the previous albums, but i think it has a good beat. besides Wherever I may Roam rules.

Thats every good metallica album in my opinion.
