The Definitive Battle: Megadeth VS. Metallica

Alright, I already know a lot about both bands. They've both had a rough past (and present) with each other. The purpose of this thread? Post your thoughts and opinions about the bands, and which band you think will last longer than the other. Now, some guidelines. If you want to argue things, make it aimed toward the bands and not the person who posted. Don't just say something like "They suck!" present an intelligent statement and support your opinion with some information. Now then, let the battle begin!

I really manage to dislike both of them. Their sound doesn't quite appeal to me, but I do respect some of the more revolutionary bands they've inspired.

Just give me some decent Cradle or something.

Lol, I didn't expect someone to say that they didn't like either of the bands. That implies that you think both bands lose. It's great that you like the bands that were inspired by these two bands, but let's please try to keep the posts centered around the two bands mentioned please. Thanks.

I've never really listened to either, but I don't think I like them much. If I want to listen to metal, I'll take Dream Theater instead.

I've heard various Megadeth songs, but haven't really attached myself to them to anything near the extent that I have to Metallica. So, I'd have to say that I like Metallica more.

While I don't much like either band these days, I grew up listening to Metallica. There's no comparison for me. I can't stand the voice of the Megadeth singer. It literally pains me to hear him sing. It's that same kind of irritation that I get from listening to Soundgarden.

Nirvana is awesome. Bleach and In Utero destroy Megadeth and Metallica, respectively.

I swear, some people can't read. Please talk about why you like Megadeth or Metallica. Please don't say that you don't like either. This only negates the purpose of the thread. I'll give an example of what a post in this thread should look like.

"Personally, I like Megadeth better. Their lyrics are more meaningful than Metallica's. Also, they have kept their style over the years. \m/ ROCK ON \m/"

Something like that, not...

"I don't really like either of them, their music is just too hard for me."

I haven't really heard anything by either band, but I'll go with Megadeth, even though their name is stupid.

Metallica. They majorly sold out, but before that they were the bomb. I think It's cool how their stuff changed. Listen to these songs in order to see what I mean. Four horsemen, master of puppets, slither, st. anger. It's different for each time period of theirs. Hopefully they'll pull their heads out of their butts and make another Master of Puppets. St. Anger sucks and marks the begining of them selling out.

I don't know much about Megadeth, but they have a stupid name.
It took a while for you to find me; I was hiding in the lime tree.

I'd agree that Megadeth sounds like a stupid name, but it's taken from an actual word (Megadeath) that means a unit in computing the hypothetical victims of a nuclear explosion. Metallica is just a name that was supposed to be used for a metal magazine that Lars Ulrich conned someone out of by saying that it wasn't a good name and then taking it for himself. Don't get me wrong, I like both of the bands, but I think that Megadeth has a more creative name.

Never listened to either. I like Megadeth better because they have a cooler name.

Honestly, from what everybody says, and from what I think myself, I think Metallica will last longer.

With Megadeth's new album? I don't think so. Currently Megadeth has the upper hand. and Mustaine's singing has improved quite a bit on "The System Has Failed" too

In terms of music longevity or band lifetime? Because Megadeth released their last album already.

Personally, I like Megadeth more. I liked the early days of Metallica, but now they just suck, really suck. I haven't seen a Metallica album that even compares to "Cryptic Writings" or "Rust in Peace" yet.

I kinda side with you TimeWolf. I pretty much like all of Megadeth's albums (mainly Rust, Cryptic, and most of Youthanasia), and Metallica's early albums. I like both bands, but they both have their flaws. Metallica's major flaw was switching styles during the 90's. Megadeth's major flaw was Mustaine booting out all of the members of Megadeth and replacing them with other musicians (I really liked Ellefson's bass style and Menza's drummining). And yes, as of now Megadeth is still a band. If they had broken up and Mustaine started a new one, then my opinion on the matter would be different. But oh well, people make mistakes.

I actually had a conversation about this yesterday with my girlfriend and we both came to the same conclusion, that both of them are on about the same level, and Iron Maiden rules over them with an iron fist.

Weird part is my girlfriend really likes Iron Maiden, which is weird because her other favorite band is Barenaked Ladies....

But if I really had to choose, it would be Megadeth, he has a better voice.

Sarn, even if you look at it they way you are, one of them is still better than the other.

While I really like Iron Maiden, if this were an essay topic, a lot of you would fail the essay.

nope, but it is a massassi thread, and you've failed.

Now how is that even remotely revelant to this thread, Strafford? I'm trying to get people back on topic, and you're just instigating. Do not post anymore unless it deals with the topic. Do not post if you are going to post off-topic. Now, continue on topic.

lol, there ya go. Was that so difficult? Yeah, I liked the motopsycho song, but I still think that Master of Puppets and Battery beat the crap outta any Megadeth song.
Who made you God to say "I'll take your life from you"?

Agreed on Battery. it's the only metallica song i sometimes still play on guitar. it rocks hard.

though I prefer Ensiferum's cover of the song. But that's just me.

And yes, this isn't a essay topic. stop trying to control something public. it won't work.

yeah, I could control it, but only if I had admin powers for the forums. Since I don't, I'm just going to have to rely on people using common sense.

My friend and I learned how to play our instruments (he's guitar, I'm drums) by practicing Metallica songs. At this point, we can play all of them. All but one, which is Dyers Eve. Sure, it seems like it'd be simple, but it takes a lot of energy to play it. We've only gotten through about the first verse of it. Since we're both at college now (different ones), we rarely play anymore. I really got into Megadeth around the end of the summer, so we never played any of their songs, but I plan on getting around to doing that sometime.

[Note]Let me tell you this, being at college is possibly the worst thing for a drummer to endure. You go for long periods of time without jamming, so you get what I call "Drummer's Withdraw Syndrome" (or DWS). DWS is horrible. You want to play, but can't. So, you end up air drumming (which makes your roommate think you are having a seizure). You also get rusty, so when you do finally get to play on a real set, things don't feel or sound right to you.
Guitarists do not get this type of feeling, since a guitar is much more portal then a drum set.[/Note]
