I need a quick favor from those of you who know tons of songs

Could anyone tell me if the following melody is used in another song? If not, I'm going to use it to write a song for a lady friend.

...Seriously if you have to ask, then that should be enough right there...

Here's a few songs it reminded me of:

David Bowie - Space Oddity
Coldplay - We Never Change (actually, if you just played chords it would almost be the exact same thing)
Jump - Midnight (reminds me of it)
Muse - Sing for Absolution
Starsailor - Way to Fall
The Films - Reason

point is, your chords sound like those songs, and those are some just off the top of my head. but that's not a melody, or at least i hope it's not. that's a chord progression which a lot of artists use because it sounds cool. you can take G C D and make a good song with those chords without sounding totally cliche, Damien Rice does it all the time.

I don't listen to a lot of music, and I often hear something, forget what song it is, then it pops up in my head later on when I'm trying to write something. Not really a good thing. But I'll check out some of those songs and see if they sound too similar to what I have in mind. I may end up doing it on piano instead of guitar, anyway.

[edit: actually, it not that I don't listen to a lot, but I don't actively listen to a lot.]

It sounds a bit like the song I'm listening to right now, You and Your Sister by Chris Bell.

But it doesn't really matter, because I don't think it's a copy of any songs. Write it for her, I think she'll like it.
It's not the side effects of cocaine, so then I'm thinking that it must be love

I've written...
[insert drumroll]

...one line.

I suck at this. :(

Or I'm being way to picky with my lyrics. But I hate cheesy sounding lyrics.

If you're writing it for a girl, there's going to be cheesy lyrics.

Girls do tend to have a much higher tolerance for cheesiness than guys do.

I recommend making it simple and sweet if you don't want cheesy. The song I mentioned earlier is a great example of this: the chorus goes
"All I want to do
Is to spend some time with you
So I can hold you"

It's very simple but effective. Another example, this time from a Big Star song called Thirteen (written from a 13 year old's perspective) :

"Won't you let me walk you home from school
Won't you let me meet you at the pool
Maybe friday I can get tickets for the dance
And I'll take you"

I hope my point is coming through okay. I think it would be effective to focus on wanting to spend time with her, and not on your undying love or something.

Or you could just play her U2's 'All I Want is You'

True. But I like to be vivid with lyrics, and certain words just don't fly well with me. And I'm not used to writing a song for someone. But I have three lines now. I'll try to simplify as much as I can without sacrificing meaning.
