How do you tune your guitar?

E-flat for me, sometimes standard. I'll drop down my low-E to D every once in a while, and sometimes I'll fool with open tunings.

My bass gets standard tuning, and rarely gets tuned any lower. Since it's only a four-string though, I'll sometimes bring it down to C when I want to thrash to some In Flames or something.

Usually standard, sometimes drop D, sometimes standard down a full step. Just depends. Same with bass.

What are open tunings?
2004-12-16, 7:12 PM #9
When all open strings form a chord. So open D would be:
D A D F# A D

And then all majors can be formed with one finger. You can also tune to open minors to get a bit more control.

i pick a nice tone for a string and fit everything else to match.

Standard down a half step.

Sometimes I go celtic and put it at D A D G A D.

Drop C and A for my two bands. Otherwise, if there's some specific song I want to play, I tune to everything from B to standard.
I have a signature.

Seven string is in Standard with a B at the bottom. My Charvel frankenstrat is generally in Eb for playing lots of Yngwie.

not really, it just comes from never learning how to properly tune a bass, it just works like that now, i dunno, the way i learned how to play was strange.

Love the way it sounds.

I just do standard. Although maybe I could tune my electric to drop-d.

How is it done? Do I just tune the E down to D, or do I tune everything else down too?

You just lower the low E to D.

All right, that's good to know. I'd probably get lost if I tried more than that at once. I'm not too great at tuning.

The first month I played guitar I tuned by ear. I was actually able to do it, although it was very hard. I could tell that a note was different, but not always whether it was too low or too high.
Then a friend gave me her electric tuner, so I've been using that.

Lately I've been trying to go more by ear. I'm getting much better at it.

Usually standard, sometimes drop D depending if the song i'm playing needs it. Quick question, why does my whammy bar (tremolo bar) make some/all my strings get out of tune when i use it?

It stretches the strings. When you use it it pulls on them making them loose and getting them out of tune.

Using different strings can help with traditional trem systems. Fender makes strings with a mini-bullet on the end instead of the age-old ring, and they hold better inside the trem and don't go out of tune as easily.

I don't have that problem. Maybe yours isn't a locking tremolo.

[edit: Or if you're using Earnie Ball, they're not very trem-friendly.]

Stretch your strings before using them to put them on.

You put on the strings, then, for each string, pull it off the fretboard (not towards other strings but off the actual surface), then release it. Tune it back to pitch. Keep doing this until it doesn't go flat when you stretch it.
