Lesser known, but fantastic artists

List artists you know, that you think are fantastic, or have great potentional, but arent well known, or still have a little way to go.

1.Jeff Buckley- Absolutely brilliant singer and songwriter, need I say more? it's a shame he died so early on

2. Beck- Again, great songwriter, more well known, but not for many of his songs besides "Loser". "Lost Cause" has to be one of my favorite songs of all time

3. John Mayer- At first thought of as a Dave Matthews clone, still does a lot of more pop oriented stuff. Recently he's taken a turn though, apparently playing a whole set until 2 in the morning doing blues improv, hendrix covers, and played with ZZ Top, at a concert this month, or last month Im not sure. If you ever hear him play live, electric, you'll see his great potential.(Or even him on Chappelle Show) :P I think he could be the next great rock artist

<3 Beck.

Steve Hill - an awesome blues player. He's played with BB King, yet for some reason he's not very well known. I have an autographed album of his, and I've seen him live. He is definitely worth a mention here.

Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains. It's really only one of Les Claypool's side projects, but their first CD (The Big Eyeball in the Sky) is pretty good.

Jean-Michel Jarre

Vangelis
Star Wars: TODOA | DXN - Deus Ex: Nihilum

Owen. Most amazing artist ever IMO, but next to impossible to find cd's other places than the internet.

Visions of Atlantis, and Sengir.

Meat Beat Manifesto!

Pearl Jam. Perhaps not totally unknown, (infact I acknowledge that ten years ago they were the biggest band in the world) but still they are probably the most under rated band ever.

I used to think that, then I realized his second album was simply more of the same, and the guy is quite simply a [censormorethanoneletter]. No doubt, he's a pretty good musician, but he's a wretched song writer.

John Mayer?

Unknown? Um, I don't know one woman who doesn't know who John Mayer is.

Personally, I can't stand him. I cannot stand his voice at all, and I hate the way he sings. Looks like he's freaking choking on an orange and trying to take a [censormorethanoneletter] at the same time.

And his music. I can understand why women like him because of his lyrics - "Your body is a wonderland!" But I cannot for the life see what a guy would see in him.

I think his songs are boring musically, voice stinks, and his lyrics really don't move me.

But this is all my opinion!

Edguy, a German power metal band, but they sing in English. Known well internationally except in the USA (at least this is one place they are not as popular). Power metal I suppose is like an 80's sounding but clean and powerful metal. Strong guitars that do not drown the vocals. Relentless guitar riffs and fast beats for most of the songs. They have many slower, very melodic songs, like Metallica did before they began to suck. Oh, and their vocalist has an amazing vocal range too. He never stops amazing me with the high notes he hits and maintains.

Bassoon, n. A brazen instrument into which a fool blows out his brains.

Oh, Jeremiah Freed of course. Arguably the best band since the early 90s. Thoughtful lyrics, incredible guitar riffs. They actually know what "melody" means, unlike many other rock bands from the 90s. I suppose they're a kind of mix between 70s rock and 90s hard rock.

Borknagar - a band which I belive isn't that well known in the US. They play quite technical metal, and they mix a lot of differerent styles into their music. You can hear influences from black metal, folk music, jazz and progressive rock... Their older stuff is less "technical" though.

Damien Rice. Wonderful song writer. Not for everyone's tastes, but there are times no other music apart from Damien Rice will do.

Keane. So much potential. Really interested to see which direction their next album takes them in.

And my sister just showed me Keane, awesome stuff. Good call on both.

Keane is amazingly big in Europe. Still, they lack some decent bass and guitars.

Jump, Little Children

...you all knew it was coming.

The Films
Red Letter Agent
Sovus Radio

and I would disagree with Buckley and Beck being mentioned in this thread. If you think you're a music guru you'll know who they are, but the masses arent bred for their kind of genius, that's where Metallica comes in.

addendum:

Rufus Wainwright - 3 word description: oh my god! 7 word description: download foolish love off of iTunes now!

The Dresden Dolls - just starting to get into them. It's a drummer and a female pianist/vox. Really really great songs, although sometimes her tone/pronunciation really bothers me. Maybe it's just because usually I hate female singers. www.myspace.com/thedresdendolls

Woah really? Virtually no one has heard of them out here. Hell they were the support act at a relatively small venue when they played a gig out here (they totally stole the show, but that's beside the point).

Keane = no guitars. That's what they are ;)

The ICP thing was a joke, and Spork, Hopes & Fears was the biggest selling CD of 2004 in the UK, the sunday paper i just read today had a chart and that told me.

I'll put down some real vague bands now, check these out:

Mr. Bungle
John Zorn
Fantomas
The Mars Volta (dunno if these are lesser known)
The Jesus Lizard
The Melvins
Helmet (also, these last two may not be so lesser known)
Tomahawk

The Melvins aren't very unknown at all, anyone who ever really got into the early Seattle scene probobly knows who the Melvins were, in fact there wouldn't have been the Seattle scene for a lot of bands (including Nirvana) if it wasn't for them.

true true, although the majority of people i know have no idea who the melvins are.

Virtually all of the Ultimae Artists, especially Aes Dana, Carbon Based Lifeforms, and Solar Fields. You can sample almost every song by any of the Ultimae Artists, so be sure to check them all out...you may be pleasantly suprised.

I'm also a huge Juno Reactor fan, but they're relatively well-known now, thanks to the Matrix Revolution soundtrack. They're supposed to be touring the US early this year, and I will kill to see them.

Blackwater. Small band out of Tallahasse that's just starting up.

www.blackwatersilence.com

They have a short clip of their song Heartstrings that loads with the page, so uh...fair warning. You can listen to three of their songs if you click on the music link at the top.

I saw them play at my campus last semester. They put on an excellent live show and I really enjoyed it.

I have nothing to do with that German metal band.

And an aritst who's actually pretty big now, or at least he's made it past the local level but lots of people still have no idea who he is, Howie Day.

At first impression, you might think that he's just another clone of someone that looks like they're trying not to be poppy. You're wrong. Howie is the original. Ryan Cabrera ripped him off so much that he even stole his hair. Howie rocks, his live stuff so much more than his album stuff. And his solo stuff way more than his band stuff.

ATM. Awesome Drum n Bass.

Explosions in the Sky. The single most awesome band I've ever heard. Their music is more inspired than anything else I've EVER heard.

Streetlight Manifesto. Great band. Also see Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution.

Assemblage 23. Weird, but good.

Minus the Bear

Pietasters

Slapstick

Mr. Bungle

Mars Volta is getting to be really well known...meh...still awesome

Colossal

Against Me! once again is getting to be really well known, but they're quite good.

Squarepusher. Really well known in the techno/DnB scene, but outside of it, nobody has a clue who they are.

The Screaching Weasels= crazy+nirvana+random stuff+yelling= awesome
NON BIG AT ALL FROM MY AREA

Picknick With Fish= A christian hard rock band from my home town. Way cool logo.

Lost in Hope= A Christian metal-core band. They are freaking awesome. Their lyrics aren't actually about Jesus but are very moving and wholesome. Controlled screaming, aka very little and it actually fits in screaming. Great guitar sound, good vocals, and they're from my city/town.

Upper Clash Trash= Punk metal. Sweetness. Same screaming thing as before. Very little. These guys are awesome live. They are all jumping around and knocking into stuff and kicking off walls. Fun stuff.
It took a while for you to find me; I was hiding in the lime tree.

Wilco - A great alternative rock band. Sweet music, reminescent of some of the Rolling Stones' (<3) old tunes. Their new album, A Ghost Is Born, is starting to gain popularity. Great group.

Do you know where they're from? I heard of them a couple years ago and have a couple of songs on my harddrive, but I've never seen them tour around here.
