Who's idea was it to try to categorize music?
I hate the terms "Country" .. "Emo" .. "Rock" .. "Oldies" .. etc

I could go on explaining .. but I just want to know if anyone else things the idea of topics are rediculous for such an art style as music.

I hate it when people chain a bunch to try to describe something... it's punk-metal-emo-funk-rock!

It's better then saying "Music for people with 6 fingers"..."Being depressed is the cool thing music"..."Loud music that only those damn kids can listen too"....and "Music that only plays near Christmas"
Think while it's still legal.

Because they're completely different artforms. The difference between genres of music is not like the difference between genres of books or movies. It's more like the difference between a movie and a painting. In the case of music, two genres can be completely different arts where sound is the product. You can get a picture from painting it, filming it, or making it on a computer. All of these are different arts with the same end product; an image.

Different genres also exist because there are different tastes and different cultures.
The music industry is a cruel and shallow money trench where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.

It's mostly human nature. We like to slap lables on things so that we can better understand or quickly identify them. For example: If I said Band A played metal, you'd instantly have a general idea of their musical style. Stringing together genres is a bit annoying, though. Like describing Primus as "A post-punk funk-metal combo." Sure, it might be accurate, but it's just too damn long.

Knowing genres used to be easy. Rock, Rap, Pop, and Country. It was that simple. Now it seems like every new band has its own genre, and I have no idea what anything is anymore.
"I got kicked off the high school debate team for saying 'Yeah? Well, **** you!'
... I thought I had won."

Yeah, exactly what Flexor said. Most music, especially Rock, has deviated in so many different direction that most bands we see on the top charts today, aren't even really the original Rock 'n Roll at all. With all the different fusions from other music types into rock, you cant really say "Hey, have you heard the rock band Joy Division?" because, JD wouldn't be considered a really rock n' roll band. You'd have to say something along the lines of Goth rock, goth punk, post punk, or what have you.
