Dream Theater
2005-01-24, 1:55 PM #1
I just found a file in my music folder 'Dream Theater - The Glass Prision' I figured a friend sent it a while back so I listened to it. That song rocked my socks off. It reminded me of Metallica, Tourniquet, Pantera, and The Painkiller ST. (Stephen Rippy, David Rippy, and Kevin McMullan). In other words it's good stuff. Is all of their other stuff as good?
Think while it's still legal.

Hh, DUH! Dream Theater is one of the best metal bands of all time. Go buy Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes from a Memory or Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence right now. I command thee.

Oh, and if you're interested, the song This Dying Soul is the second part of The Glass Prison. It's all one 'story' about the steps of breaking alcohol addiction.

Hello and welcome to the real world.

Dream Theater rocks your socks. recommended albums:

Six Degrees of Inner turbuluence
Awake
Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory
Train Of Thought

Images and Words is really awesome too. heck, all of them are. but 6° and Metropolis are the best. Metropolis being at first place.

EDIT : Sorry, I had the wrong thread.

Oh and Dream Theater is awsome. I friend of mine introduced me to a a few weeks ago, and I am loving it.

Oh and I'd also recamend Lacuna Coil : Comalies to everyone, I know it's a little comercial, but the album still has some great tunes on it.

check out lacunacoil.it for some sample songs.

My friend used to be heavily into Dream Theater and pretty much everything like them. Now he hands out their CDs to people if they need a laugh.

Woot woot, Lacuna Coil. I touched Christina Scabbia. She's one of the few people I've seen that are better looking in real life than when they're done up for photo shoots.

APPROACH IMAGES & WORDS WITH CAUTION

It's a far, far lighter album and the 80s keyboard effects are not for the faint of heart. That said, I love the album.

Dream Theater are by no means straight metal. Their sound varies a lot throughout their catalogue.

So anyway, you'd probably like Train Of Thought the most if you're into the heavy metal aspect.

80's keyboards is what DT is all about!

And yeah, if you're looking for Metal in DT, tough luck, you'll find something much better.

Dream Theater are quite awesome. Their songs are very well written, and I do recommend Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory.

In addition to Dream Theater, I recommend the band Liquid Tension Experiment. Two CDs containing all instrumental pieces. The band contains three of the members of Dream Theater: John Petrucci (guitar), Jordan Rudess (keyboard), and Mike Portnoy (drums), as well as Tony Levin on bass. Very very good band, in my opinion. A good bit more progressive than Dream Theater.

Most of DT's material isn't as heavy as that song. If you're solely into that, check out their recent CD Train of Thought; you should love it. All of their other CDs are great in their own ways but they're not as heavy metal; they're progressive metal with some various influences ranging from Pantera to Peter Gabriel.

I nearly worship Dream Theater. Few metal bands are better.

Also, an interesting bit of trivia: Dream Theater wrote The Glass Prison after John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy (guitarist and drummer respectively) went to a Pantera concert and became inspired.

Dream Theater is sex in music form. The only album I don't like from them is When Day and Dream Unite. I'm so glad they got James LaBrie after the first album, he's one of my favorite vocalists.

A Change of Seasons, Misunderstood, Blind Faith, The Mirror, Metrpolis: Part I - The Miracle and the Sleeper, Disappear, Vacant, and Space-Dye Vest are some of my favorite songs from them.

I could go on and on...

One of my favourite songs by DT is "Eve." Whenever I'm stressed out, I can lie down and chill out while listening to that song. It's a beautiful tune.

Not a song though. :p

I like Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance the best. I always liked The Great Debate song too.

Lacuna Coil is pretty awesome too. Not sure if you like DT if you'd like them though. I think they're pretty much different...

Yeah, but it's not a song. It's an instrumental. :)

an instrumental isn't a song?

holy crap, news to me!
2005-02-01, 10:03 AM #27
Music with no vocals are tracks, music with vocals are songs.

2005-02-01, 1:13 PM #28
Um... any piece of music a song. Vocals are not a requirement of a song.
2005-02-01, 1:39 PM #29
Well, if we are going by the dictionary definition of "song" and not the every-day-man's use of the word, then vocals are indeed required.
2005-02-01, 5:38 PM #30
So at school, in band class, what are we playing? A track?
2005-02-01, 6:31 PM #31
Dictionaries, especially online ones, really don't do any good in a debate. They don't dictate what a word means, they just describe words for people.

It is perfectly valid to call something without vocals a song. Song does come from the same root word as sing, and originally did require singing, but the meaning has changed.

There aren't any better words. Track definitely isn't the right word for instrumental songs. "Movement" or "piece" sound too pretentious.

This is pathetic. Grow up. All of you. You turned a thread about a band into an english debate. Your parents must be proud.

It's all in good fun. Or at least, I thought it was.
2005-02-02, 3:39 AM #35
After going to the discussion forum and seeing ATLEAST three threads go wayyyyyy off topic over something stupid, then I came here and there is an argument over the proper defenition of a song. People started getting sarcastic, then one person whips out the dictionary, then chances are someone would have jumped over the internet and strangled another person...etc..
Think while it's still legal.

I also think you overreacted. This wasn't the kind of debate that is a fight, it's the kind where people can actually learn something from each other.
