Home studio... basic, cheap stuff

I'm looking at doing some home recording and basically I know nothing about how to get started. I have a mixer, I have mics... how do I go about hooking it up to a computer correctly? What else should I look into? Anything would help.

There's a good amount of all around interfaces there, takes in multiple devices at once, straight into your computer. They run from $99-$500 for your low end to mid level gear.

And if you want to go REALLY cheap, and sacrifice some quality, you can get adapters(1/8" to 1/4", for most cords) for your jacks on your mic/guitar cords, and plug them directly into the Line In or Mic jacks on your computer, then record via a program on your computer. The adapters will run you about $4

That's what I've been doing and it sounds like crap.

BAM!

How much are you willing to spend? Because I might be able to recommend something much better.

That's actually what I was looking into.

Any software? I've worked with Nuendo before and think it's pretty ****ing awesome in terms of what you can do with it. But what do you guys use?

*my band did a rough take of one of our songs on my bassist's computer, just hooked our powered mixer into the mic jack, sounds decent for everything being done in one take*

Stuffs

I'm not personally a big fan of pc recording. I prefer something specifically designed for recording... say, a Digital Multitracker. That particular one, however, only records up to 8 tracks simultaneously, 16 altogether. I don't know how many you need, so.... meh.

I hate hate HATE the "portable" studios or multitrack stations.

Give me a mixer with an analog output or a digital output, I really dont care.

I'm looking at getting a standard mixer and a firewire XLR interface for my computer. You keep all of your tracks separate when you record.
