What is playing you?
2005-01-31, 11:14 AM #1
I've been a drummer for five years now. I can play almost every Metallica/Megadeth song, and I can play almost every genre of music. I played in my high school's jazz band for two years, and I liked it (mainly for the solos). I always have a side dream of being in a famous metal/rock band, but who knows, it could happen. SO, what instrument do you play? How long have you played it? Which genre do you like to play?

Drums - 6 years. 2 years in my jazz band as well (played 2 years of percussion in band during school, but that's basically mindless)
Clarinet - 9 years
Saxophone - Tenor for 5 years, Alto for 4
Piano - 3 years
Flute - Off n On for 2 or 3 years, mines a POS so I feel little urge to play it
Guitar - 4 years, but I don't play it that often so I'm not very good
Bass - 4 years, play it alot more often than my guitar, but not as often as drums or saxmachine
Ocarina for 2 years, fun to play at bus-stops and stuff. I think mines going out of tune, though:confused:

Also, I've been composing/producing all types of music for 3 or so years now. Basically, 100% of my free time goes to music, or my g/f, or both because she has a beautiful voice.

edited a typo in "Ocarina"

Played the flute for about 5 years and the clarinet for about 7 years. Getting sick of the clarinet though. Anyone wanna buy it? 500$c, at a loss. :p
The music industry is a cruel and shallow money trench where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.

Piano - my whole life, but not very good at all.
Flute - fourth through seventh grade
Clarinet - fifth grade
Hand Bells - sixth grade
Bass Clarinet - eighth grade through sophomore year
Tuba - eighth grade
Tenor Sax - sophomore year through now (my favorite wind)
Baritone - senior year
French Horn - senior year
Electrc Guitar - Just got one a month or so ago, woot woot (my favorite overall)
2005-01-31, 3:01 PM #8
Alto Sax - 6 years of intensive playing
Piano - On and off throughout my life
Vocals - 3 years or so (well, I've been singing my entire life, I guess, but not consistently)
Drums - 1 month
Recorder - 1 year, but I quit when I was like 10
Guitar - I've played around on the guitar for a few years, but I haven't taken any lessons or studied seriously yet

um.. and I have a harmonica which I suck at.

I can't see myself playing any additional instruments. I'd much rather concentrate on the ones I'm currently playing.

(Approximations)
Guitar - 4 years.
Bass - 3.5 years.
Piano - Hard to tell. I took lessons, sucked, then learned by chord technique instead of reading music. So I'll count the latter time only - 3 years.
Violin - Meh... about 3.25 years. Only recently have I been even remotely good at it.
Drums - Like forevah. But there's a ginormous gap between when I played as a kid (like under 5, and yes, with a band once) and now. The more recent timespan would be probably less than a year, since I got back into it.
Mandolin - meh. Less than half a year. Then I sold it. Because it sucked. Now it can suck for someone else. :D
Vocals - yes, I play my vocals. :p I've been singing since I was a kid, then a ginormous gap again, and now about 2.5 years.

Fixed for me.

I also played trumpet, tuba, baritone, trombone and alto sax back when I was musical director/teacher for a local cadet corps. I did that for a couple years, had been playing the instruments for 5-6 years.

I prefer the term "percussionist." :p

I also learned to play the tuba (badly) and am now attempting to teach myself some basic guitar.
2005-01-31, 5:21 PM #16
Meh, I use the term percussionist when I refer to people who play instruments in a band like snare drum, bass drum, crash cymbals, chimes, etc. Drummer I associate with people who play drumsets, just the way I think of it.

That's the distinction my drum teacher pointed out to me a long time ago. Although I suppose keyboard/piano is technically a percussion instrument too ;)

Don't think it would be a valid poll then. Just vote for the item that you're strongest at.

Well, I've played trombone for about 8 years now. I auditioned a few weeks ago for the West Virginia All-State Band, and I made it, 10th in the state.

I also play guitar, which I've done about 3 years now, teaching myself. I haven't done a whole lot of serious playing, mostly due to the lack of people to really get together with. I play for my enjoyment, though I still do a decent job at it.

Yeah, I'm planning on being a music major.

Im special, I can play guitar and sing at the same time!
However, my voice is crap :(
Hopefully puberty will kick in soon and give me an awesome voice.

I think puberty made my voice worse.

Just for a random fact: The male voice doesn't completely mature until about 30 years of age.
