Is Pale Blue Eyes really sad? I always thought it was more of a calm love song, but maybe I missed the point.

Lou Reed has written some sad songs, but I can't think of any specifics right now.

Low - Sunflower

The lyrics are vague and fairly abstract, but it drains me to even listen to that song.

Damien Rice - The Blower's Daughter

Probably because I'm listening to it right now, but this song gets me every single time... His voice is so strikingly passionate.

Eels - Elizabeth on the Bathroom Floor (one four letter word that would usually be asterisked here) Wouldn't say that it's all that beautiful, but it is pretty sad.

Tom Waits - The Ocean Doesn't Want me Today Yay. More suicide. Not beautiful either. Rather creepy though.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Rockets fall on Rockets Fall . That is beautiful. Music to play at full volume once the end of the world comes around.

Vivaldi - Al Santo Sepolcro. Then again, it is a requiem.
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

The Sisters Of Mercy - Cry Little Sister

That one's a mislabel. It was written and performed for the movie The Lost Boys by Gerard McMann, and I think he did the score for the movie too. Information about him is scarce.

I love that song (talk about amazing vocals)... well, the whole Dark Side of The Moon Album, actually. :p It's easy to tell that Great Gig In The Sky is about heaven, but you can still wonder in what context...

The Burning Paris is probably the saddest band I've ever heard. I like it cause it comes off sounding really sad and sincere, but not "emo-y". Any song by them can take something dark and gloomy, and make it beautiful... as if finding beauty in darkness. They also do a cover of The Smiths song "Asleep", which is an incredibly sad song. Can't wait to go see them live this weekend. :)

Asleep is actually one of my least favorite of the Smiths' songs. It's one of the few that's genuinely sad, but it's way overrated.

I can't believe I forgot Leonard Cohen!!! He's the king of sad songs.

Suzanne and One of Us Cannot Be Wrong are my favorites.

You Never Know - Immortal Technique

It's about how he met a woman who had AIDs and passed away without him knowing.

"What happened for the rest of the day is still a blur;
But I remember wishing that I was dead, instead of her;
She was buried on August 3rd;
The story ends without a sequel;
And now you know why Technique, don't ****ing fall in love with people;
Hold the person that you love closely if they're next to you;
The one you love, not the person that'll simply have sex with you;
Appreciate them to the fullest extent, and then beyond;
'Cause you never really know what you got, until it's gone;"

THis guy spits some of the realest **** I've ever heard.
Got a permanent feather in my cap;
Got a stretch to my stride;
a stroll to my step;

Jugband Blues - Pink Floyd

The lyrics are obscure, but if you know about the man who wrote them, it becomes sad. He ( Syd Barret ) was the original guitarist for Pink Floyd.

He basically had a HUGE mental breakdown and was kicked out of the band. He wrote the song right before he was kicked out. What's sad is after this, he never succeeded in music again. A couple years later he gave up music entirely and according to his family didn't play the guitar for years.

He did succeed in music after Pink Floyd, thought definately not as popular, the Madcap Laughs and some of his other solo work was very successful.

It wasn't really a "huge mental breakdown" either, it was more of a gradual decrease in his mental health that his erratic behavior and mental health got him ousted from Floyd. Most of Madcap and his solo work came after Floyd as well, so he did play guitar for a while after getting ousted. He just decided to quit though, went to live with his family away from everything. Now he leads a quiet life, painting, and supposedly writing.

The Syd Barret story is really not as elaborate,crazy, or more tragic as people put it out to be.

But anyway, just thought of this, an essential:

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

Probably lost on the lot of you, but anyways;

Eric Lapointe - N'importe quoi
Francis Cabrel - C'etait l'hiver
The music industry is a cruel and shallow money trench where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.

He actually did release two solo albums after that. Also, after Dark Side of the Moon came out, he showed up in the studio where the band was recording and they talked about him joining again. He was going to. Then the next day they couldn't find him and he disappeared again.

No. That's totally a lie, did you not read my post at all?
He most likely was NEVER committed. He's lived with his family in the country ever since. Get your facts straight, saves you from looking stupid.

The Tuvan folk song, Kongurei. You can download the song here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00008ZQ5Q/qid=1110057835/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i2_xgl15/002-2106447-1331258?v=glance&n=507846

Quote:
A man returns to his homeland after years in exile, and feels like a stranger in his own country. During Soviet rule the Communists reorganized the traditional six regions of Tuva into a dozen administrative units controlled by the Party; they confiscated herds and pasture lands and turned them into inefficient collective farms. The man asks forgiveness from his ancestors for going astray; he asks the spirits for salvation of his own soul.

Quote:
Aldan chetken chylgymnyng
Alazy kaÿdal, Konggureÿ?
Aldy kozhuun chonumnyng
Aaly kaÿdal, Konggureÿ? Konggureÿ?

Where are the sixty horses in my herd?
Where is the hitching post for my horse, Konggurei?
Where are the six regions of my homeland?
Where is the village of my tribe, Kongurei?

Cheden chetken chylgymnyng
Chelezi kaÿdal, Konggureÿ?
Chedi kozhuun chonumnung
Cheri kaÿdal, Konggureÿ?

Where are the seventy horses in my herd?
Where is the tether for my horse, Konggureÿ?
Where are the seven provinces of my homeland?
Where is my people, Kongurey?

Repeat first verse

Aldyn-ydyk Tangdymny
Aramaÿlap, dagydym.
Aldy kozhuun chonumnu
Algap ÿöreep, maktadym, maktadym, maktadym.

The Aldyn-ydyk Tangdy mountains
Are the greatest of them all
Where are the six regions of my country?
I praise, praise, praise the people of them.
I'm just a little boy.

I saw Syd Barrret walking around Cambridge once, at first I thought he was just a homeless person, but soon realised it was him. It was sad to see him like that. And the same day I walked past Stephen Hawking ( he was in a que to see The Return Of The King ). Surfice to say it was the best day of my life.
