Shopping for a guitar amp modeller
2005-03-05, 7:46 AM #1
I'm moving into an apartment next semester, and I won't be able to play through my amp anymore, so I'm looking for a decent amp modeller.

Right now I'm looking at the VOX Tonelab (maybe even the SE).

I need suggestions/personal experiences.

Thanks!

The BOSS GT-8 is looking pretty sexy too, for a bit cheaper.

Tonelab SE. It's the best sounding, and you can get better dynamics out of it than most other modellers which sound really compressed, because the Tonelab uses a tube.

Yeah, I've been listening to tons of user clips of the Tonelab since yesteday, and I must say it sounds amazing. The only thing I haven't heard it do is real thick, heavy distortion. The Tonelab has a certain "sparkle" in the sound it produces, unlike the other modellers.

Does anyone here have one? Or have any of the other modellers?

the only one i have is the RP100 which is definately below what you are looking at but i've messed around with a Tonelab SE

I went by Italmelodie today with my RG450 and spent two hours trying out the Tonelab, the H&K Tubeman, the Tech21 Sansamp Classic and the PODxt Live. I left with the Tonelab, 2 MIDI cables and a set of Dean Markleys. :p

The other three were quite decent (especially the Sansamp and the Tubeman), but the Tonelab blew me away. A steal at $400 Canadian, considering the PODxt Live is $500 Canadian.

I recorded some high-gain sounds earlier, they still need tweaking (I've only had the unit for a couple hours), but I think they sound pretty good, compared to what I got out of Amplitube and the NI Guitar Rig demo.

Enter Sandman intro, no post effects, crappy drum track

Thanks Jim, for your input. :D

Where can I get user clips? (Unless they're the same ones you can get a musiciansfriend.com)

Here you go. Their server is crappy, sometimes the page won't load, but it won't time out, so you kind of have to stop and then refresh. It's annoying, but it's there's a TON of different user sounds on this thread.
