Sorry, but I have to rant about ignorant kids who are too narrow-minded and stupid to realize that ones opinion doesn't reflect the opinion of all.
I've been spending a lot of time in my band, and it's been a lot of work. We've got a couple songs recorded (which I've done in my basement) and we're planning on doing a couple shows in the near future. Anyway, the point is that we've worked hard and spent countless hours trying to get this stupid EP out before the summer.
I guess you could describe our sound as post-hardcore emo (I hate calling it that), in the vein of Small Brown Bike, Brand New, etc. We've been distributing a bunch of demo CDs with our single on it, and the reaction so far has been really good. However, some hardcore kid and his cronies came over and starting criticizing everything about the one song. It wasn't as much criticizing as much as insulting every part of the song.
After all of his blatant insults, I pointed out that we weren't hardcore, and just cause you didn't like it didn't mean everyone else didn't either. So there I am, being bombarded by all of these quips by a bunch of guys essentially saying "you don't scream the vocals, so it's crap". I went on to say I like music that has power and feeling, not just noise. I was then referred to as an emo lover (which I really don't like anyway), and to go listen to all of my emo bands.
It doesn't bother me of what he thinks of ME rather then what he thinks of himself. To think that you're right all of the time, and that your specific taste is the ONLY thing that is good... ugh, it makes me sick. I usually keep my mouth shut when someone talks about a genre/band I don't like, or I'll compliment the things I DO like in the band. What makes it worse is that the kid got into hardcore only cause of his friends, and just last year he was in love with AFI and Led Zeppelin. Apparently, he hates that stuff now.
On the other end of the spectrum, a kid I've known for a long time but never really talked to came up to me after listening to our song, and said it was really good for our kind of music. He's a classic rocker guy, loving Pink Floyd and Van Halen, but he said that if he was into our genre, he would be in love with it. He said he didn't neccesarily like it, but he could appreciate it for what it was. Why can't all people be like that?
One thing I like about Massassi so much is that people are friendly (most of the time), and respect your tastes and opinions. I'm sick of everybody being full of themselves, and everyone thinking they're always right. This doesn't have to be just aobut music, but for every opinion a person has.
The funny thing is, I knew more hardcore bands then that kid did, but I don't go throwing that around like I'm a musical elitist.... I dunno what to think of it all. What are your thoughts?
