I need new music...
2005-03-25, 8:56 PM #1
... because file-sharing will soon be illegal in Canada. I heard it on the radio this afternoon.

Plus, I lost my 12gb MP3 collection a couple weeks ago when my HD corrupted itself.

Suggest new bands for me. Stuff with nice guitars in it, but nothing too heavy. I'm sick of listening to metal, I need to broaden my horizons a bit.

Thanks.

...

And I meant NOW.

Squarepusher - Iambic 9 Poetry. You would never be able to tell that it's not a real band. Seriously. Check it out. Beautiful song.

Let's just say...the rest is en route. :)

You mean that was all sequenced? Wow. I did kind it kind of funny though that the guitar was playing harmonics the whole time. :p

Well, I'm in the process of recording something vaguely interesting right now, but I don't know if it's what you have in mind. Plus I can't play the guitar solo on it yet. :(
Maybe later.

Franz Ferdinand, Flogging Molly, The Presidents of the United States of America. All very good bands, and pretty broad horizon wise.

Shintock, I suggest looking a bit more into New Wave (or gothic rock, as it's also called). Stuff like Bauhaus, The Sisters Of Mercy, The Cure and Siouxsie all aren't quite metal, but have some nice guitar stuff.

You probably know my suggestions.

But to name one song, Jean-Michel Jarre - Ethnicolor.
Star Wars: TODOA | DXN - Deus Ex: Nihilum
2005-03-26, 10:32 AM #11
Mr. Bungle
Mastodon - metal, but actually good.
The Mars Volta
DJ Shadow
At The Drive-In
Gorillaz
Chemical Brothers
Queens of the Stone Age
Aphex Twin
Beastie Boys
The Locust
The Pixies
Zero 7
Zen Guerilla

You're freaking out for nothing. It's never gonna happen.
The music industry is a cruel and shallow money trench where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.

Here's the stuff I'm currently listening to on a regular basis:

The Features
The Killers
Red Letter Agent (local Atlanta band)
Second Shift (local Atlanta band)
The Films
Hank Williams
Muse
Radiohead (Pablo Honey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Phantom Planet
The Futurists (that'd be me)
The Shins
Butch Walker
Keane
Jeff Buckley
Queen
R.E.M.
Travis
Neutral Milk Hotel
David Bowie
Doves
Snow Patrol
Starsailor
Beck
Jump, Little Children

If I had to recommend 5 that had some pretty cool guitar bits (I went from metal to U2/pop in like a week..... weird transition) it'd be this:

The Features - That's the Way It's Meant to Be (free video on iTunes)
The Shins - Caring is Creepy/New Slang
Phantom Planet - Badd Business
Jump, Little Children - Underground Elite
Jeff Buckley - Nightmares by the Sea
David Bowie - Queen ***** (that's biyatch)
Radiohead - How Do You

...ok that's 7 but whatever.

If you're trying to ween yourself off metal:

Primus
Colonel Claypools Bucket of Bernie Brains
Colonel Claypools Fearless Frog Brigade
Oysterhead
<3 Les Claypool

Somewhat heavy, but ingenious, pure art. Psychedelic.

Otherwise:
Mothers of Invention
Radiohead
King Crimson
Moody Blues
Tool
Pink Floyd
United States of America

This man speaks the truth. Also check out Sausage, another one of Claypool's side projects. And if you don't mind country/folk influenced music, you might like The Reverend Horton Heat and Social Distortion.

Get Apocalyptica's latest (self-titled) if you haven't got it already. Cellos are awesome, especially when they have distortion.
