Hey guys, I've never played guitar before, and I'm looking to get into guitaring. I'm getting my first job this summer, and want to save up for a nice guitar, not like UBER but one that will do for me. My price range would prolly be 350 or less for the guitar, and please suggest some amps too! Thanks.

Amp? Vox AC30. God, I love that thing. Nice mid-high end to it. Great for funk or anything else with a wah.

Oh. In that case, definitely check out the Hughes and Ketner Edition series.

And for a guitar in that price range... you might want to save up. For 500 you'll get a decent guitar that will last you a while. For less than 350, you're not going to get much other than maybe a junk Squier.

check out ibanez guitars for chunky filth.

For metal and hard rock, a $350 fat strat might be a good idea.

It works great for about anything. It's just got some extra punch with a wah pedal is all.

Just stay away from Squiers, whatever you do. They are absolute crap of the crap.

If you're just now beginning guitar, you shouldn't buy anything too expensive. I recomend an Ibanez starter pack.

I'd start with an acoustic guitar.

You can get a pretty decent classic guitar for $70-$110.

You'll be learning how to play alot better.

You'll also gain alot more stretch in your fretting hand, because the frets on an acoustic guitar are bigger, and the neck is fatter.

It's also less expensive to replace things incase you break something by accident.

That, and it sucks to dump alot of money into something to find out you hate it.

I got my new *boobies* for only £200, was actually worth £400, I'm playing with it everyday . Great sale.

I really like my Tacoma, and I've heard good things about Olympia. Id reccomend going to a music store and trying things out.

I got a terrific Ibanez V70 acoustic for about $200NZ which is proabably $150-$170US.

Ibanez is the mainstay for many guitarists and I haven't heard anyone complain about them.

Oh, okay then - I've heard one cynical guy on an internet forum complain about their Powersound pickups.

True, although he could go with a small VOX Valvetronix amp, they cost like $200-300 and emulate the AC15 and AC30 pretty damn nicely.

Umm... they really are crap. They're muddy, there's no definition, and the only thing they're good for is hi-gain rhythm chunking. They suck for leads, they suck for cleans, and they suck for anything in between. My old RG has decent Inifinity pickups in it, and I've played my buddy's newer RG with the Powersound pickups extensively, and they sound terrible. ****ing terrible.

i've got a new model RG with infinity pickups in it, maybe these powersound ones aren't in every ibanez.

I think most of the cheaper RG's use the Powersound pickups.

[edit] Looking through the RG series on Ibanez' website, an awful lot of them use Infinities now, when before only a couple guitars in the series had them.

My acoustic-electric is an Ibanez. It has great tone, and an accurate fretboard (unlike a *lot* of acoustics I've messed with). I don't much care for the electronics on it. They're not terrible by any means, but they're not uber-great either.

I've played an acoustic-electric Ibanez through a AER acoustic amp, and it was okay, but not fantastic. The guitar played wonderfully though.

Yamaha definitely should be considered. They make incredible guitars for the price, unless you check out the ultra-crap budget ones.

My acoustic-electric is an Austin cutaway. The neck is almost like the neck of an electric: narrow, thin, and fast. I love it. The soundbox may be a bit shallow (and therefore lacking in bass) but the pickup is very nice and the guitar sounds fabulous when plugged in.

just the lower priced models... i'd say anything below $400 probably has powersound pickups

i'd like to throw some duncans into mine and throw the powersounds into a junk drawer to be forgotten forever... since selling them would be too much trouble and if i ever have pickup problems at the same time i have money problems....

I have the Valvetronix AD120 (same size as the AC30) and I love it... most of the time.

I'd suggest a 15w Orange Combo amp. Great tone/feel and not too expensive.

For guitars...

acoustic - for under $350 check out Dean, that japanese brand that starts with a T, or some Martins/Taylors are under $350.

electric - cant go wrong with a fat strat. I've heard from several Ibanez owners that unless you get their best models, they suck pretty hardcore.

actually the lower priced models can be good... if you put in an extra ~$100-$150 for better pickups...

Except some of their best models are only $600, like the SZ720. Damn sexy guitar, with Duncan-designed pups.

I've played a double-fat Strat before, and it was definitely nice as well, considering that it wasn't that expensive.

I want a Casino style guitar...

I played a left handed one once (Cause I play left handed) and... it was OMGawesome.

I just need to find a company that makes one cheap....
