My dad and I were down at Guitar Center yesterday, and my dad found this classical guitar used for about $440. It's in pretty much perfect condition, no fret wear, no dings or scratches on the body or anything like that.

It was the closest I've ever seen him to impulse buying. Anyway, now he's thinking about buying that guitar and trading in one of his older classical guitars. Anyone know anything about this guitar? Good things, bad things? From what we can find on the internet, it's a pretty nice guitar. Seems to retail about $1000, but you can buy it online for $700.

What do you guys think?

The guitar bears a terrible curse. It is pure eeeeviil.
The music industry is a cruel and shallow money trench where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.

I have played it (my buddy has one) but I have never plugged it in, so I can't comment on that. I did, however, enjoy playing it. It sounds grreat.

Yamaha makes great guitars, as long as you don't buy the "budget" ones. My bass is a Yamaha, and I tried a Fender Jazz and P-bass before buying it.

My brother actually bought a Yamaha classical guitar pretty cheap a while back, though, if I remember correctly, it was because it had been badly damaged/recently repaired.

I agree with with Shintock...Yamaha does make great musical instruments. I have a Electronic piano that has 100 different instruments built in the CPU. It's bloody awesome!!! By the way, flexor: that's bull**** about it being cursed, dude.
Yo, check it out:

What kind of music is he gonna play with it? I know you said 'classical', but it doesn't *look* very classical. Or is it just an acoustic one he's looking for?

Either way, haven't heard that one yet - sorry

no... it's definately a classical guitar. Just doesn't much look like it due to the cut out, and it's size and the low action. But it's got a wide neck like a classical guitar.

OK cool... Well, I'd suggest the normal things: play it first.

A checklist I find important personally
  • Ask if you can play it at home for a day or two (!)
  • Check every distance between the frets, simply by playing it. They cant even be a millimeter off. Go really high. When the distances shorten high on the fretboard, luthiers get sloppy sometimes. It has to be crystal clear. (everywhere for that matter.)
  • Play something very lyrical on the trebles and check out if they can deliver an over the top emotional sound.
  • Attack the bass strings too (people often overlook this). Make sure they can carry the trebles and can play heavy, hard melodies on their own.
  • Check the tuning pegs!
  • Go REALLY loud (on par with a loud piano!) and really quiet. Can it deal with that?
  • Is it actually fun to play? Does it feel right?
  • play play play play play

Sorry if you already knew this... I got a bad experience with buying guitars a while ago, so I'm just trying to prevent it from happening to others.

Good luck with it!

hehe, well it's not me buying the guitar, and I'm sure my dad knows what to check when making a purchase like that... I don't. But I won't need to. Thanks for the tips anyway. :D
