first of all i must point to this comparison
not all formats covered in that comparison will be in this one
now since lossless all sounds the same this will be more about file size using the highest compression level (wavpack can go slightly higher by adding in -x but the encoding speed takes too much of a hit for 1MB of difference)
this was done using [WITH_TEETH]
WAV 566MB
FLAC 360MB
ALAC 359MB
Monkey's Audio 344MB
OptimFROG 344MB
Shorten 387MB
WavPack 349MB
WMA Lossless 351MB
encoding times
FLAC ~4-5minutes
ALAC less than 2 minutes
Monkey's Audio ~6minutes
OptimFROG 1 hour
Shorten about 90seconds
WavPack ~1minute 45 seconds
WMA Lossless just under 2 minutes
as you can see FLAC and monkey's audio take about the same amount of time to compress from wav while most of the others take under 2 minutes
OptimFROG is excessively slow considering it took A FULL HOUR to encode an album that takes less time to play
which is the best? based on features, compression, and encoding speed... WavPack...
but when including things like hardware support FLAC and ALAC are the only 2 that are supported by any hardware players at this time
