So my friend and I got hired to play for an hour at this bar. I play the acoustic guitar and he sings. The gig plays pretty well and we are still trying to figure out what were going to play. So far we have Everlong by Foo Fighters, Going to California by Zep, Blackbird, and a few others we have written ourselves. I figure to fill an hour we have to play 15 or so songs.

Any suggestions????

Acoustic and vocals=Goodbye Blue Sky by Pink Floyd.
America, home of the free gift with purchase.

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here can also be done with only one guitar.

As can Pink Floyd - Mother.

Across the Universe- The Beatles
That's The Way- Zeppelin
Two of Us-Beatles (If both of you could sing)
Born to Run- Springsteen
The Best of My Love- Eagles
Friend of the Devil- Grateful Dead
Fire and Rain- James Taylor
Margaritaville- Jimmy Buffett

Those are just the few that come to mind.

What you play depends on the crowd that you're playing for.

Don't play Everlong if you're playing a bar, you might like the song, but I don't think it would really fit for a bar crowd.

Wish You Were Here is a good choice, easy to learn and play, including the opening solo. Beatles, Don Mclean, Clapton, Floyd and Allman Bros. all have great acoustic pieces that easily sit with most audiences.

In your earlier stages at a performer, you're going to be at the mercy of your audience, that means play somewhere along the lines of what they want to hear. Unless they start coming to your shows to hear you play, assume more of the role as just an entertainer.

Really? Its such an awesome song though, I would think most people would want to hear it, it could be a nice break from the mellow classic rock were doing...

Radiohead - Creep

just skip to the middle where he's like "Ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun run RUN RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN!"

and repeat that for about 15 minutes.

I would not recommend playing Margaritaville EVER unless you're playing at a Buffett-esque bar.

Some songs that I have ever sung at something like this or would recommend.... (in your style of Classic Rock)

Elton John - Rocketman
Elton John - Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting
Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love
Sting - Message in a Bottle (I've heard AWESOME versions of this song acoustic, like I hated this Sting song before I heard an altered acoustic version of this song, mess with the tempo)
U2 - Desire
Willie Nelson - Unchained Melody
U2 - Hawkmoon 269
U2 - All I Want Is You (I did this for an encore one night.... it was awesome)
Arlo Guthrie - Alice's Restaurant
Arlo Guthrie - City of New Orleans (I LOVE THIS SONG)
Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline (get the audience to do the Ba Ba Ba's and you're set for the night)
Zager & Evans - In the Year 2525 (wear weird collars like on Conan)
"Those ****ing amateurs... You left your dog, you idiots!"

I must say Schming, I'd love to hear your take on Saturday Night's..., tell me how did you exactly perform it, in an acoustic setting such as the kind we are talking about, or hows its actually recorded?

Smells Like Teen Spirit. :p

Foo Fighters - Times Like These (the acoustic version kicks serious ***)
Barenaked Ladies - Old Apartment
Bryan Adams - Heaven
Collective Soul - Shine. I do this song solo live, I love playing it, and it gets a good reaction
Creed - My Own Prison
Incubus - Drive
Incubus - Pardon Me
Sonata Arctica - Mary Lou
Kansas - Dust In the Wind
Scorpions - Always Somewhere
Scorpions - Wind of Change
Scorpions - Still Loving You
Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing. A ***** to play on a steel-string, but kicks *** anyways.

My répertoire is fairly limited to French songs, so I'm sorry for the crappy suggestions. :p

I played it on keys and had a friend on guitar. So... kind of that setting, but not really. I have played it on acoustic solo, but never performed it like that.

What about tenacious D? Does anyone know a song of theirs I could do with just a guitar? I think since its a younger bar, I could get lots of laughs.

What's that song, "Best Song in the World" or something like that? It was pretty funny if I remember, you could probobly do that song about the Jesus Ranch too.

Yeah, Anything from Blood on the Tracks would be sweet... Or All I Really Want to Do, again by Bob Dylan.

You could do Heroin by Velvet Underground... heh

Better to have too many songs than too little -- you can always cut yourself off at the hour mark.

You're not serious about **** Her Gently, are you?

Tourniquet has a CD - Acoustic Archives. They have some quality tracks on that album. Good for...playing.
Think while it's still legal.
