I want Renaissance keyboard music.
2005-05-25, 3:46 PM #1
I doubt any of you will be able to help me, but I'd really like some free sheet music of keyboard music from the Renaissance. That is, the kind of stuff that would be played on clavichords, virginals, spinets, harpsichords, and possibly even organs, before 1600.

Help!

They didn't have keyboards during the renaissance.

Yes they did. They had clavichords, virginals, spinets, harpsichords, and organs! These are keyboard instruments. Clavichords were invented in the 14th century. I'm not sure when organs were invented, but I'm fairly certain they existed in some form during the middle ages as well.

I meant, the electronic ones. And you know I was joking. :P

Apparently, this site is an omnibus of Early Music-related stuff. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have too much as far as basic sheet music goes, but you could always convert the midi files it has into sheet music with this program.

Hope that helps. ;)

I tried using another similar program to do that, and managed to get notation for the first part of "Mit ganczem Willen wünsch ich dir". I tried it with several different midis, and was still unable to get the rest of the song, for various reasons. (One of the midis wasn't even complete!)
If I can find some decent midis, I might be able to use that method to get a few pieces, but I'd still rather have the proper sheet music.

I looked in my university library and found a book of 14th and 15th century keyboard music. Unfortunately, nobody is allowed to take the book out. :(

I'm also not allowed to download music, games, and movies from a thing called a sharing network.
