First Week's Worldwide Sales Top 800,000

System of a Down has done it again. The band's fourth album, "Mezmerize"
(American Recordings/Columbia Records), enters the Billboard/SoundScan chart in the Number One position, as did their CD "Toxicity" when it was released in September, 2001. Since the release of "Mezmerize" last Tuesday, May 17, the CD has scanned an astounding 453,000 copies domestically. "Mezmerize" is the first disc in a 2-disc set with disc two, "Hypnotize," expected out late this fall. "Mezmerize/Hypnotize" was produced by Rick Rubin and System's Daron Malakian.

Now here is the really cool part...

"Mezmerize" also came in at #1 on numerous music charts around the world
including those in Germany, Canada, Austria, France, Sweden, Japan,
Switzerland, Colombia, Greece, Brazil, and New Zealand, bringing the first week's worldwide sales in excess of 800,000 copies.

"B.Y.O.B.," the first single from "Mezmerize," is a Top 5 track at radio, and the companion promo video has been in high rotation at MTV, MTV2 and the Fuse Network for weeks.

"Mezmerize" has also scored big with the press:

"A stunning work." - Associated Press

"Every track burns with urgency." - USA Today

"One of the most inventive, unique albums in years." - Newsday

"Insanely good." - Entertainment Weekly

"Everything on 'Mezmerize' hits and splits with viciously honed purpose." -
Rolling Stone

"Some of the smartest music in mainstream rock." - Wired

"SOAD's music makes you wish more rock bands would take such brave and
impressive risks." - Newsweek

"Probably the best record NME has heard all year." - NME

I thought that county albums had the lowest selling numbers anyway.

I commend you on your mathematic capabilities, Rob ;) . Anyway, I got the new SOAD album earlier this week, and I gotta say that it really ROCKS! I also liked their last album, but this one seemed to have more melody and harmonization. I also like how their drummer used double bass on this album. I can see why it's getting all of the good feedback from everyone.

Good stuff. Mezmerize is an awesome album. Can't wait for the next one to hit the shelves.

I sorta liked these guys until I heard this new single, and I have to say I'm not impressed. Maybe someone could recommend a better song off the album so I could listen to it on iTunes?

I think there's previews for the whole album on iTunes.

Yeah, but I wanted to listen to a whole song. Call me cheap, but I don't want to spend 99 cents for a song unless it's really good.

Lost In Hollywood (The full song) plays on that site. Lost In Hollywood is their next single so I assume it's legal.

Just because it's #1 means it's good? Britney Spears must be a godess.

I don't really like System of a Down. They love to jump around between hard and soft way to often. It makes it too hard to listen to. Their last 3 albums are like this, and it's really annoying. They're shooting for way too much "variety," and end up sounding like a bunch of ADD kids with loud instruments playing the same songs over and over.

The only songs I really like are the ones that generally consistent thoughout.

All right, this song's tolerable. And is that the guitar player's voice? It's somewhat mezmerizing (forgive the pun.)

I know what you mean. Sometimes it works out fine (Toxicity), sometimes it bothers me (BYOB).

I'll see if anyone I know has the album and could lend it to me so I can listen to it and make an informed opinion, but so far, my favourite SOAD album is still their first one.
2005-05-31, 12:48 PM #21
I'd say BYOB is the craziest song on he album in terms of it not being a consistent sound. The rest aren't bad at all in that sense.

BYOB I thought was the most normal track on the album  It just fit perfect.

Thats because you're a fanboy.

Agree!

2005-05-31, 7:04 PM #25
I disagree.

System of a Down has a bunch of songs that go from hard to suddenly soft. BYOB is no exception. If anything BYOB has more of a Toxicity or STA feel then the rest of the songs on Mezmerize.

I think he was agreeing to Robs statement. (which probably is a true statement)

I dunno, I'm just basing it off that I think that it is physically impossible for you to say something remotely negative about this band.

I thought BYOB was more like the material off their first album - something akin to War?.

So you prove me wrong by only having more praise for the band?

Dude, no one cares that you're a fanboy....

You make no sense. I backed it up with other albums, not by screaming LOLOLOLOL <3 SOAD I WANT THAR WANGZ!

Agreed.

It's not bad to be a fanboy. I'm a bit of a SoaD fanboy myself.

But it was really the most erratic IMO. The other songs have much more of a flow to them.
