Hey guys, I'd like to get into making music on my computer, anything from techno, to metal, to well, whatever.. I'm looking for a good Windows compatible program.. something along the lines of Apple's "GarageBand" type thing.. something like that maybe.. would you guys happen to have any suggestions...?

Fruityloops if you want the easiest interface, reason or logic if you want better sound quality.

Only if you can get it free, like me. :)

Nothing than a good ol' sequencer.

Or Fruityloops on this case.

What's the difference between music that is "artificial" and music that isn't "artificial"?
I'm just a little boy.
2005-05-29, 5:38 PM #13
Uh... artificial music is produced without directly playing instruments (such as using sound samples and pitch-shifting them, like in FruityLoops).

A guitar isn't exactly something you'd find in nature. So called "real" instruments are just as artificial as any synth or sampler.

Yeah but you know what I mean. Artificial as in... you're computer is emulation the sounds, not the guitar/amp.

Except that you actually have to be a musician to play a guitar. Anyone can click around on a piano roll and find a catchy melody.

Just like anyone can learn the guitar. The only difference I can see is that electronic music isn't actually 'performed' in real time.

I know what you mean, I'm just toying with you. :p

I waste a lot of my time with this nifty little program. I think there also used to be an offline version.

Yeah, but learning guitar takes time, dexterity, and persistence. Learning to on the computer just takes... well... time.

Also, reason has arguibly the worst sound-output of all the major name programs.

Don't use reason, it's very limiting in the long run and you're gonna wish you'd spent your money on something more extendable and powerful if you start getting serious. Fruity Studio (not loops anymore, guys :-p) is probably your best choice. It's extendable in many ways, very easy to pick up, and it's quite affordable. Plus alot of us here use it and can give you help if you need it

You should check out a Juno Reactor show when they tour North America this year. Ben Watkins claims that, along with AMAMPONDO, they can reproduce about 99% of their music, live. I'd agree though, it's a rarity these days.

That's actually not even completely true in itself. I'd say 3 or 4 out of 10 producers these days can run a live set, and often do. It's just a matter of looking for them. My friend and I are working on a live PA act, and it's not much different than composing it piece by piece. It's alot more fun, too :)

How would you handle all the automation, the morphing and etcetera? Or how could you incorporate a douzen or more elements at one time? Unless you dumbed it down to the basics of the basics, wouldn't you need like a hundred people for that?

Nah, you just need uber control surfaces.

Automation is just that, Flex.
And yes, basically you have some stuff pre-set and you basically trigger half your music, and perform the more "exciting" bits. 1 or 2 people can put on an awesome live PA with enough experience. DJ Shadow's live PA is 2 or 3 people, and it totally rocks anything on his recorded albums.

Grow some extra limbs!

Honestly, it's not nearly as automated as one would think if you have a good setup. Another method is have one person triggering loops/samples on queues while another one makes the loops/tweaks the samples live while another guy plays lead/drums/whatever.

And yes, squarepusher is also an awesome live show (that I've never seen personally, but seen some sexy vids and their album is hawt)

I know my favorite songs from them, the Iambic Poetry ones, are done live. Great songs.

I don't think that playing with sequencers on concert isn't live, now playing the whole thing from a tape...

Actually, even that is live, BECAUSE YOU CAN'T PLAY IN A CONCERT IF YOU'RE DEAD.
