You're going to give me good music
2005-06-03, 9:36 PM #1
I'm sick of today's music. Pop, Punk, Pitty me Rock. I'm sick of it. I want something good.

I'll tell you what I want. I want a music that doesn't take thinking to like it. I don't want to like it just because they are really overly elaborate with their instruments and stuff. No. I want to listen to them because it's plesant to my ears. I don't want a subject matter that's MEANT to make me angry and harm people. I want to read into my music the way I want to. I don't, however, want some randomly obscure set of lyrics (Kashmir anyone?) that could be taken 50,000 ways.

Sick it to me!

You may have trouble finding it, but you should check out the band Failure, particularly their last CD, Fantastic Planet. Amazing diversity, but still remains consistent throughout. There are a couple songs that have the vague lyrics you mention (Smoking Umbrellas, Dirty Blue Ballons [at least if you don't know what it's talking about]), but the rest is easy to identify with and listen to.

Here's a video for Stuck on You.

The Bad Plus- Good stuff. Pianos and goodness.

Explosions in the Sky- Insturmental Rock Orchestra (not greenday cuztheysuck) This stuff is really amazing.

Sigur Ros- Icelandic music. Kinda eerie. On their cd () they dont even have lyrics, its a made up language based off of Icelandic. Its very pretty stuff. Nice to listen to.

The Roots- Do you want more!!!?!?!?!! my favorite CD EVER.

...And you will know us by the trail of the dead Goodstuff (not hardcore) Just really good Indie Rock.

The Pixies - Buzzing, noisy pop-rock; the rock and roll equivalents of surrealists. I just discovered them last year and they've quickly become one of my favorites.

Anyone that knows me could see this coming...but...

Five Iron Frenzy! They have a lot of energy, tons of diversity in their lyric matter, and just make you want to dance (or, at least make me want to.)

Sure, they're not the tightest or most instrumentally profound band of all time, but they are (...were...:() around to make fun music. But, if you're not looking for happy ska, check out...

Machinae Supremacy. A very obscure metalish band that is also very fun to listen to. Not too hard, not too soft, but they make great music. At least check em out.

I'm seconding Explosions in the Sky. Sooo beautiful.

Anything by Tom Waits. Best voice ever. Bone Machine, Alice, Mule Variations, Blood Money, Frank's Wild Years, Rain Dogs and Heart Attack and Vine are all great albums.

Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain. Hauntingly beautiful and melancholy (not melodramatic). Utopia music video The "Human" and "Pilots" videos are also from the same album. Constantly see it on cheap sales too.

Soul Coughing - Lust in Phaze (the best of). It's the cream of the crop of Soul Coughing. What's not to like? It's a bit like beat poetry, I guess. Try the tracks "Super Bon Bon", "Screenwriter's Blues", "Unmarked Helicopters", or "True Dreams of Wichita" to see what I mean.

The Arcade Fire - Funeral. Makes you feel clean and safe.

Boozoo Bajou - Satta. It's one of the better dub albums released recently, and strangely enough, it's from Germany (don't worry, it's instrumental). Carribbean vibes, warm and mellow.

DJ Shadow - Endtroducing. The penultimate breakbeat album, if you're into that type of thing. Perfect album to play while lazing on bed on a Saturday morning. You might also like UNKLE - Psyence Fiction which is a collaboration with DJ Shadow (and others, including Thom Yorke).
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

Primus ! - Somewhat heavy, but sophisticated. One of the most talented, original groups to come across the mainstream in the past 15 years. Les Claypool is one of the best bassists who ever lived, and one of the most innovative. Larry Lalonde was a huge part in creating a lot of the metal that exists today, and is a great guitarists. And Tim Alexander is an amazing drummer, I still haven't heard anyone close to his style.

Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains - Claypool + Buckethead(Solo guitarist, played with GNR for a while, he's one of the best out there today)+Bernie Worell(Parliament, George Clinton, one of the best keyboardists ever) + Brain Mantia( Also played with GNR, he's incredible) = Possibly one of the best jam bands ever to grace the earth.

Oysterhead - Claypool on bass/vocals, Trey Anastasio ( Phish) and the drummer from The Police, crazy band.

I third Explosions in the Sky, although you have to digest their music. It's not really something you pop in your CD player for a couple minutes while going to the local grocery store.

I recommend Meneguar, which I've been listening to nonstop. Very talented indie-punk with super catchy lyrics and lots of energy. Saw them live a month ago, and they were great. I promise you'll being singing along in no time. Listen to The Temp.

The Decemberists - Picaresque. This is one fantastic CD of indie rock, I've been listening to it pretty much nonstop since I got it. There are some fantastic lyrics, and the CD covers a wide variety of subjects: spies, infants of spainish royalty, suicide, prostitutes, doing poorly at sports, and my personal favorite, a sea - chanty about a mariner's revenge. You can download a track from this CD on amazon. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00092QGMU/ref=j_hp_rs_4_10//104-2729107-8667139?v=glance&n=468646

Say Hi To Your Mom - Numbers & Mumbles - Super catchy, and done by pretty much one guy. Lyrics tend to focus on robots, video games, and a Beatles cover. Once again, Amazon has some songs: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/artist/-/digital-music/239334/ref=j_dp_artn_1/104-2729107-8667139

Sha-blammy for Explosions In The Sky! Great band.

The Shins are easy listening, upbeat, but might not be plesant to your ears. No idea really. You might want to give us a few example bands that fit that criteria?

Ummmmmm... The Beatles? (Sorry, in the middle of a Beatles obsession.)

Well, since there's not much to go with (as far as what kind of music you presently like to listen to), I'd recommend some metal bands if you like it fast and heavy. Mind you, I'm not recommending glam metal (Whitesnake, Poison, Motley Crue), I mean some really well-thought out lyrics and tracks written by some seriously talented musicians (Metallica, Megadeth, Black Sabbath). There's also other bands like System of a Down and Rush that have well composed music. I'll list some songs from each band that you can listen to if you want.
Metallica
One
...And Justice For All
Battery
Master Of Puppets
For Whom The Bell Tolls

Megadeth
Holy Wars...The Punishment Due
Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?
Hangar 18
In My Darkest Hour
Foreclosure Of A Dream

Black Sabbath
Paranoid
Iron Man
War Pigs
Black Sabbath

System of a Down
Toxicity
Science
Question!
Forest
Atwa

Rush
Tom Sawyer
Xanadu
Anthem
The Temples of Syrinx
Time Stand Still
Red Barchetta
Who made you God to say "I'll take your life from you"?

Let me help you all out:

I like and already listen to, of what you posted, the following:

SoundGarden,
AudioSlave,
Gorillaz,
Live,
System of a Down,
Weezer,
Metallica,
Black Sabbath,
Nickle Freaking Creek, (I can't believe I saw this on here, since it's one of the VERY few country bands I listen to religously)
Tenacious D,
The Roots.

To add to these sorts of sounds, I like:
This is My absolute Favorite: Incubus,
Modest Mouse,
Jet,
Sugar Ray,
Goo Goo Dolls,
Foo Fighters,
Alien Ant Farm,
Authority Zero,
JR Cash,
[Old] Matchbox 20
POD,
[Old] Staind
Linkin Park's Reanimated,
Dave Matthews [Band] (I know you all hate him; I don't care)
Everclear,
Kanye West,
Breaking Benjamin.

I like a range of music styles, but very few in every genre. I like things that have an original feel, but aren't overly different or obscure. (Read: Tool, Pink Floyde. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Tool and Pink Floyde, but I have to be in a mood or it just pisses me off) I'm looking for more music to add to these sorts of musics above.

Btw I know Rob Thomas came out with 2 albums after they disbanded Matchbox 20 or w/e, anyone know if they are any good? I haven't heard them yet, but I really like all the Matchbox 20 stuff.

If you end up liking Claypool, then you should also check out Sausage and Les Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade. And even if Primus is a little too "different," you should still check out Antipop. I think it has a much more mainstream feel to it.
