That I can attempt to learn on guitar, nothing too complex and no crap like metallica.

Currently learning Bring It On Home by Led Zep, its fun.

Any good ideas?

If you're just starting out, Smells Like Teen Spirit. It's pretty simple, and if you learn the whole thing, it covers a good variety of chord progressions, and that single-note solo. Chords, harmonics, bending, hammer-ons, and learning to sing and play guitar at the same time.

Metallica isn't crap. :(

Green Day is quite simple.

Over the Hills and Far Away, perhaps?

Hmm, hold on I wrote down all the songs I started playing first.

Ah, I remember now, I learned a bunch of new stuff that didn't really help like Blink 182 and Papa Roach before I made the switch to classic rock.

Woah! Woah! Woah!
Metallica definitly is not crap. They've got some of the most intelligent guitar pieces I've ever heard. If you listen to some of their earlier works, you can spot numerous areas that are classically themed. If you don't know what I'm referring to, you should listen to these songs of theirs.

- One (most of the beginning)
- To Live is to Die
- Master of Puppets (middle of the song)
- Orion (middle of the song)
- Unforgiven
- Fight Fire With Fire (beginning)
- Fade to Black
- Call of Ktulu

You may or may not have listened to Metallica before, but if you haven't, don't judge them by what other people say. They aren't all heavy and fast. And they know what they're doing.

Even though it's a pretty simple song, and you learn a good deal about hammer ons and bull offs with that opening riff, I think it's a tad advanced for a real beginner, at least to get sounding right.

I've heard all of the metallica albums multiple times, I take back what I say, the intro to the first track on Kill Em All is pretty sweet, apart from that though, its not what I like in music at all.

Try some Iron Maiden then. They've got some good guitar pieces.

I might give Iron Man a go, if not i'll try warpigs.

Its hard to pinpoint my musical tastes, I like and dislike weird bands.

Some technically proficient and complicated metal bands are some of my favourite bands (Mastodon, Fantômas), yet I can't stand some of the more well known metal bands that I can tell have had a large influence on bands like mastodon.

Grindcore and Death Metal own but I am nowhere near proficient enough to play that, Any good jazz and blues artists around that I could learn from?

Meh, I'm trying to keep away from too much rock based music, i'd rather develop a weird inda style encorporating many genres, since most music gets boring to me after a few listens and I need to change CD to something totally different.

Jazz guitarist?
There's always Django Reinhardt. Incredible man. Pioneering French gypsy jazz guitarist. Try Nuages or Minor Swing (possibly known as Swing Mineur) ?

Maybe some of Clapton's stuff for Cream? Sunshine of Your Love ?

Little Red Rooster by the Stones?
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.
