Yeah, I'm looking to update my Techno/Trance/Rave library...

...any hugely awesome songs I should get?
I need a signature SO amazing, and SO funny, that when you read it, you say, "Hey, that's pretty funny."

Ewww, Trance is like the only music worse than ska.

Rob if you haven't listened to all trance and ska you can't say that.

Also: are you talking about real jamaican ska or punk-hijacked 1990s ska?

Wow, people who think ska sounds like punk need to be slapped in the face.

I've had the displeasure of listening to a fairly wide variety of music that just needs to die. Sucks to be me, sucks to be open minded really..

No, punk HIJACKED ska. That's not the same thing as sounding like it. :p

Such a vast difference in sounds has created much debate between the ska and punk communities as to the validity of the ska punk genre...Some of the most popular and long lasting third wave ska bands include The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, Catch 22, Early No Doubt, Sublime, Less Than Jake, Buck-O-Nine, Operation Ivy, Suburban Legends, and Big D and the Kids Table.
While chronologically, bands like The Allstonians, The Slackers, Pressure Cooker, Let's Go Bowling, and Hepcat can be classified as third wave groups, their sound is much more similar to that of the first wave. Their music is influenced by or strongly resembles the ska of 1960s Jamaica.

The problem with a lot of this third wave, I think, is that for the unskilled bands it's become an exercise in having more instruments in one band than they know what to do with. It ends up sounding rather crowded and ungainly as a result.

That wiki entry is full of crap. They also say there's a fourth wave genre of ska and that LtJ was the pioneer for it...pure effing bull****. That's one where the person who submitted it was making **** up off the top of his head and conveying it as fact. It's true third wave sounds different from first wave, but it sounds nothing like punk, and neither could be disputed as being ska.

Actually I asked my friend who's been listening to ska for 20 years about it, not knowing what it was all about...and he said it was complete and utter bull****. In fact, he reviewed ska CD's for a living, and still gets free CD's from every ska band I know of all the time because he's good friends with most of them.

You should have him write the wikipedia article then :p
2005-08-29, 6:55 PM #17
He might if he didn't want to go through the bull**** of writing it, making it sound intelligent enough to pass the wiki filters and well educated enough to seem like a real encyclopedic entry, and if I cared enough to ask him. It's just one wiki article, and it's not too far off until it hits 3rd wave and '4th wave'.
