Best TECHNICAL guitarist?

Ok, who do you guys think is the best TECHNICAL guitarist. Forget songwriting and everything else, if it came down to it, who would put on the best show?? I'd say Van Halen

I'm really a big Don Ross fan... Or Leo Kottke... nobody can rock a 12 string like that man.

of course, there's Michael Angelo Batio... but his hair is scary... so no.

I'd say John Petrucci is the fastest guitarist I've ever seen, but he seems to be a little sloppy these days for various reasons. Not sure who else - I could rattle off lots of names but I've never seen any of them play besides JP.

Buckethead, Satriani, or Eric Johnson. Satriani is one of the grandaddys of shredding, and still is awesome today. Buckethead is just Buckethead and needs no introduction, no one plays quite like him. Eric Johnson, while I'm not a huge fan of his particular sound, the man sure knows his way around the fretboard. If you don't believe me, just check out a video of him doing "Cliffs of Dover" live.

Wow, I don't think I've ever heard anyone quote his as the best technical guitarist before.

He's a awesome rhythm player, but for leads and stuff?

Or Satriani, though my favourite is Dave Gilmour.

Hate to break it to you, but Dave Gilmour is about as technical as my foot. He writes absolutely magical solos, however.

Satriani or Petrucci I guess. Hard to conceptualize technicality though.

I know Gilmour isn't that technically talented, that was my point in my post, I believe the others are the best technically, however to me, the magic of Gilmour's solo's, are what make him my favourite.

I also find that some of the more technically skilled guitarists, while making awesome music, doesn't affect me or make me get into the music as much as a guitarist like Gilmour does.

And his sound is incredibly unique.

Eddie Van Halen, yes. Rather underrated I think.

Eddie yes! If you listen to "Can't Get This Stuff No More", it is difficult enough to keep time just listening to it let alone playing it (it's probably more difficult for the drums than guitar, but difficult nonetheless). And I can't mention Eddie Van Halen and technical guitar playing without mentioning "Eruption". It's difficult to make a good guitar solo, but making an entire song that's a good guitar solo is much more difficult. And he was really ahead of his time in guitar solos, so well done Eddie, well done.
