I've heard that George Harrison's work was often much more complicated and intricate than it first appeared. I don't know though; I don't play guitar. Has anyone else heard anything similar?

Yeah, bugged out list, but Rolling Stone tends to have those :P. Mark Knopfler should be higher than at least Jack White, come on. While you could argue that Jack White is good at guitar in the same sense that Cobain is, Cobain played a huge role in the change of mainstream sound and playing, White hasn't done anything new. Beck and Santana definately beat out Kirk Hammett. Satriani isn't even on the list. Joni Mitchell is a amazing, but I never really considered her a great guitarist. What are Tony Iommi, Kreiger, Angus Young, Randy Rhoads, and Dave Gilmour doing so low on the list?

I would consider possibly Jonny Greenwood being on a list of great guitarists, just for his songwriting and everything he does that goes into radiohead, but Ed O'Brian? He plays not too awe inspiring rhythm.

The Edge should not be on that list.

The Edge is all reverb + delay added to simple rythms and licks. I'm not saying he doesn't have any skill at the guitar, but certainly not enough to be on that list.

I'm going to agree with matrixhacker about Jonny Greenwood. He's got a very original style.

But my god, how the holy crapulous cow could ANYONE in the right mind put Edward Van Halen at #70????!!!!

Dave Gilmour should be higher than #82, I think that's where he was.

I know he wasn't a fast player, but his sound was incredibly unique, and was probably the best thing in Pink Floyd.

Cobain's good, but #12? nah.

No big argument with where Hendrix is placed however.

That list has some pretty wacky things going on. For starters, why the hell is Angus Young at 96???

Those kinds of lists are completely worthless. You just can't write "definitive" lists like that, because it's all based on opinion, and there are six billion different opinions out there.

Indeed, besides, every list of "greatest" things by Rolling Stone magazine has been pretty crappy, not only because they pick the wrong people, but also, like you said, because its based on opinion, not fact.

The Edge is on the list because he was an innovator of a completely different sound. In terms of technicality, he's only really good at strumming superly fast.

Meh. The Rolling Stone has a bad history of making ****ty lists. I've found that sometimes they don't make their lists to what or who they really think is that best, but they make them to what they think will make the average person reading the magazine will like.

I don't think Cobain is really that good of a guitarist at all. He just happened to be in the right place at the right time, and his death (or suicide rather) only made people think more highly of him for some reason. I do believe that both Angus Young and Eddie Van Halen are much better guitarists than he was and both deserver to be higher on the list, if not above him.
