I want you to all know how brilliant of a lyricist this woman is. Has anyone ever heard her pretty little song "Us?" Some might think it's a poppy little song that's talking about a relationship.

No.

It's a wity little comment on the bible and its original meaning being obscured beyond its intentions.

"And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves." - Mark 11:17

The Prophets are the "us" that are sick of how they're being used as tools to the religion. They're statues, they're blamed for anything negative written in the bible, and so forth.

I don't know, I just figured I'd shine light on an artist who many wouldn't think is really all that deep.

....I'll have to check her out, it sounds kind of interesting. What kind of music would you classify her genre?

Alternative Pop... kind of. Like I said, she's got very very very deep meanings to seemingly simple songs. The songs themselves all sound VERY unique... so I don't know. Pop is close, but not. She uses lots of pianos, too.

You can hear the majority of this song on her site.

Oh, and to make my post have a bit of relevency, I'll post the lyrics:

Code:
They made a statue of us
And it put it on a mountain top
Now tourists come and stare at us
Blow bubbles with their gum
Take photographs for fun, for fun

They'll name a city after us
And later say it's all our fault
Then they'll give us a talking to
Then they'll give us a talking to
Because they've got years of experience
We're living in a den of thieves
Rummaging for answers in the pages
We're living in a den of thieves
And it's contagious
And it's contagious
And it's contagious
And it's contagious

We wear our scarves just like a noose
But not 'cause we want eternal sleep
And though our parts are slightly used
New ones are slave labor you can keep

We're living in a den of thieves
Rummaging for answers in the pages
We're living in a den of thieves
And it's contagious
And it's contagious
And it's contagious
And it's contagious

They made a statue of us
They made a statue of us
The tourists come and stare at us
The sculptor's mama sends regards
They made a statue of us
They made a statue of us
Our noses have begun to rust
We're living in a den of thieves
Rummaging for answers in the pages
Were living in a den of thieves

And it's contagious
And it's contagious
And it's contagious
And it's contagious
And it's contagious
And it's contagious
And it's contagious
And it's contagious

I don't see anything special about the lyrics...maybe it's just me, but they seem worse than most.
Think while it's still legal.

I like what I've heard of Regina Spektor, but I haven't been able to find the CD in a store (or elsewhere...). I guess I'll have to wait until the next time I go to Tower.

When it comes to female singer/songwriteres, Fiona Apple is and probably always will be my favorite.

Um... read the bible. That song is increadibly meaningful to anyone who believes in the teachings of the bible, and not the entire idealogy that's come from christianity.

[sorry to bump this back up, but I forgot all about the thread, and wanted to keep it going]

Anyone can write meaningful lyrics to jesus-folk.

It's seriously not that hard. Thems people are easily pleased. I mean, look how popular country is.

I finally got Soviet Kitsch, and I'm disappointed. She has some pretty cool/catchy stuff, but the music is way too simple. Some songs have the same couple bars repeated the entire song. I still like it... it's just a bit boring. She's kind of like a watered-down Bjork/Fiona Apple hybrid.

I'm not jesus-folk. If you listen to that song and apply it to the bible, suddenly it puts religion in a much different light.
