I just got the new Stratovarius album. It's pretty good, it's very different to their other stuff, it's not quite as catchy but it's a more solid and powerful sound. It still has a few immediately great songs (Fight!!!, The Land of Ice and Snow, United) whilst the others grow on you.
When you look at the overall album structure, it seems to be telling the story of the band over the last couple of years, i'm assuming this was the intention and it works well.
The album hopefully marks the necessary change in direction for Stratovarius to bring itself back into the same league as Sonata Arctica and Nightwish. It's good that the core band members are back together (Timo, Timo and Jens), hopefully to bring us even more albums.
