Don't know if anyone uses audioscrobbler, but I used the search function and I couldn't find any topic about so I thought I'd start a thread of my own.
audioscrobbler is a plugin created by the people of www.last.fm
It is available for pretty much any musicplayer/OS combo and basically what it does is send which song you are currently playing to the last.fm server.
There it uses the information the plugin uploads to generate certain data:
a list of the ten most recent song played,
Your favourite artists by songs played
favourite tracks
Weekly favourites
More importantly:
It calculates a music profile for you and seeks and points out users with a similar taste in music. Besides that it also generates a lists of artists you haven't listenend to, but people who have been listening to similar music have. It's in my experience a great way to discover new bands. There are quite a lot of bands I listen to now but didn't know about before I started using the plugin.
Besides personal stats it's also possible to join/create groups and generate group statistics. And of course it wouldn't be complete with an ultimate chart of favourite songs and artists from the entire community.
Here's my profile page, where you can see what kind of information is displayed:
http://www.last.fm/user/stVedder/ (though you can't see all the information I can see when I'm logged in myself)
Here's where you download an audioscrobbler plugin and sign up:
http://www.last.fm/postsignup.php
And I've taken the liberty of creating a massassi group, so it would be cool if people would join it!
http://www.last.fm/group/Massassi
Basically once you've installed the plugin you won't ever notice again that its there, it's completely automated and so insignificantly small that it shouldn't be of any memory hog. And in return you get a lot of nifty stats about your music behaviour and most importantly some very cool suggestions of what you might like also.
As a member of Audioscrobber it is also possible to listen to their radio station, or to personally optimize radio stations. (For the more advanced features one would have to pay though :\)
I've been using it for a year now and I love it. And basically anyone I know who uses it does. So check it out, and if you decide to get hooked join the massassi group
